14 years a slave in Taiwan for migrant workers

Sad crazy stuff.

I would like to repost this myself, but I always try to verify with another source, especially a story as horrific as this one. Do any of you know if Taiwan News Online is a recognized, reliable news source, or is it more a gossip rag? Also, I couldn’t find the story in their Chinese site; would anyone have the link to that?

This looks like a _Liberty Time_s piece about it:

This looks like an ETTV/ETToday (東森新聞) news video about it:

Thank you @Charlie_Jack!

You’re welcome!

Terrible.

Outrageous but not surprising given what I’ve seen in my time here.

Allow me to make bold prediction: after the outrage dies down, these jackass bosses to get off with a Ting Hsin style slap-on-the-wrist fine.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Guy

I sure hope they can get citizenship after all this time…

would they actually want it after all that?

Maybe. Some would, some wouldn’t. I sure as hell would and would frankly feel rather vexed after all that time.

Agreed. Abhorrent, and definitely not a single event. It’s like everyday I’m repeatedly reminded how horrible this place is.

But given that this factory owner is nowhere near the league of that Ting Hsin lowlife I’m guessing that he and that agent would get many years behind the bar. They certainly wouldn’t have enough guanxi to walk away happily.

With govt action (clearly needed to stop practices like this) there is a two edged sword.

In order to prevent things like this from happening, the govt may resolve to better police (ie control) the whereabouts of foreign workers.

They could institute a monthly meeting with each and every foreign worker. That is they could “eyeball” each individual working in Taiwan as a foreign worker and check documents to confirm all are accounted for.

This will stop something like this.

However, will make Taiwan a police state.

The factory should be made to pay a gargantuan fine equivalent to what it’s worth and the money given to the slaves. And perps jailed for the length of time as they imprisoned others. No parole.

The enslaved should be given a free ticket home (first class) courtesy of the tw govt for it’s failings. And an APRC should they desire one.

Yes, give them a APRC. I should be against socialism, but if these workers learned the a thing or two about production of Tofu, that factory should be seized and given to the workers after proper management training.

Or the complete assets of that company, the employment agents in Taiwan and others should be seized and put into a high paying trust fun for the workers each getting an appropriate share to the suffering they endured.
Some one should follow the story every few months until a conclusion is reached. This story will certainly fade away like other similar ones.

My wife says the Chinese news reported the couple sold their dofu to health food stores and on facebook solicited donations for their Buddhist faith.

The owners say they were guilty of hiring illegal wailao, but no slavery.

The manager said the management was afraid the workers would run away, so they would accompany them every time they left the building…once a year.

The work cards of the workers were destroyed, as well as other records. The authorities basically have testimonies as to the workers having shifts from 7 am to 9pm…often to 11pm, no overtime pay.

One thing I am concerned: news showed the workers being sheltered at a church. If mafia involved, the news broadcasted the worker’s location urbi et orbi.

There was some talk of giving them new jobs as caregivers.

Yeah. They don’t get paid and it’s called hiring. Right… Taiwanese logic

They should at least get them all the back wages and some kind of compensation. Bankrupt the factory!

Is there an excommunication procedure in the Buddhist faith?
Or is all punishment reserved for the next life?

Buddhism doesn’t have a centralized hierarchy like Orthodox Christianity or the Roman Catholic Church.

I suppose they could be expelled from whatever temple they attend due to social pressure.

Their relatives businesses are already taking the brunt effects. Seems the factory owner’s factory has a famous restaurant in Taichung…where unpaid overtime of local workers is also par de course.

well well well —
a fine of 1.2M NT$ + 500K NT$ for the broker -
AND, yes and, they are waiting for their temporary work permit
:wall:

a real joke -

here is the quote: ‘’‘it will fine Chan Shen Country Food Co., Ltd. tofu factory NT$1.2 million for holding migrant workers against their will. The bureau will also fine the brokerage company NT$500,000 for forcing the migrants to work illegally.’’’

worth the read but what a JOKE —
