BBC Entertainment not on MOD anymore

There is a scrolling text on the MOD channel carrying BBC Entertainment that they will cease broadcasting from March 10th for some reason. For me the BBC was the only reason to have MOD, so good bye to them. Is there any other means to get the BBC here in Taiwan? I still have a Ku band setup (sans disk, but that is easily obtainable), so is that an option? Cheers. --Hans

Samsung TVs with SmartHub have it for free.

MOD also dumped the Japan news channel within the last year. They keep dumping things I like.

Hmmm, don’t these smart TVs spy on you? I’m not going to buy a new TV for the BBC only, so that is not a solution.

Spy on you? More than that. More like nagging. My TV tells me when it thinks I’m sitting to close to the screen.

Delete.

Are you serious?! BBC? That is the main reason we watch. Kids love the Doctor and the Bake Offs and the older one adores Graham Norton.
Is this the whole BBC package or Just entertainment. They added a whole mess a great channels recently.

I was happy when they killed DIsney JR in favor of Boomerang. The new generation of Scooby DO and Looney Tunes are great!

Who do we complain to. This is my nightmare all over again. I was so freaking happy many years ago when KBRO or who ever was the previous company offered digital cable.

Tons of English Channels. Nick, movie channels etc. It was great. Then one by one, slowly and painfully the channels disappeared.
20, 19 18,17… 3, 2, 1. I finally canceled after the last useful English Channel went dark. It would be an other two or three years until my area could handle MOD.

And AMC is leaving us, too. Occasionally channels come & go. But I don’t know if MOD is planning to replace BBC Entertainment with another BBC channel. Singapore gets BBC First.

We subscribe to every channel on MOD, except Porn, Philipino channel, and the French News channel. So losing any channels is a problem for us, because we like this channel, and watch it a lot. I’m planning to write to MOD to ask for this.

BBC Channels came a while ago, but it looks like MOD is going for a shake up with new regulation changes. I suspect that it will become more like regular cable here. Either way, ti’s a pity.

It’s also interesting that DishHD’s channel offerings get fewer and fewer, too. And I don’t like the Cable TV companies here, they’re … well, I won’t say what I think they are. But it’s not good.

Just so you know. MOD does not provide programming. Programming is provided by another party under contract. Be prepared to speak chinese and do some calling. You will get answers.

I know this because, I single handedly fixed a major problem with MOD in the early days. You can say thank you if you were an early Nick Fan.

Here’s the story. MOD came! Nick had finally returned to Taiwan. I switched the second language button as I did earlier with the first incarnation of digital cable (KBRO) that dropped Nick a year or so earlier.
I got nothing. Silence. I called MOD. They said “We don’t handle programming”. I called the Taiwanese Program provider. They said, “We no speak English”. I called several times and someone said, “No, Nick not in English”
I called the Asian hub in Singapore and got in touch with the woman in Charged. She said said “That’s funny, English is the basic free feed, the other languages are the ones that are charged” Regardless, English is sent free of charge she told me.

Then English appeared but it was five seconds out of sync. That was a local technical problem but I again annoyed Singapore. So, whenever Partick spoke, you saw Spongebob.

OK. I’ve got more problems than TV now. But a TV fan who speaks Chinese needs to go beyond MOD and talk to the local provider and report back to us.
*Explanation: As it was explained to me, MOD is the plumbing. They are really just concerned about making the pipes work and getting us the programing. The actually choice of packages comes from a company that buys the rights and makes the deals on what shows are seen in Taiwan. In the early days of MOD, that providers name and number appeared on the bottom corner of the screen. You will have to dig to find answers.

I got this info from the MOD website. It’s noon now, but I’ll doubt there is someone around today who can answer questions:

頻道號碼 77
價格 50元/月
頻道營運商 愛爾達科技公司
頻道執照持有者 英商英廣國際股份有限公司台灣分公司
服務電話 02-23973833

Happens every year, providers renegotiate their deal with the channels, than MOD with the providers.
Taiwanese providers are a**holes, they only put these shitty local (shopping and ‘fun’) channels on cable, MOD.
Few years back MOD told me they are negotiating to put HBO on, nothing yet.

It may happen every year. It did on regular cable I know, but this is the first time in several years the core channels are being touched.
I’m surprised because the BBC line up recently expanded. Sad.

The wife wants MOD cancelled so the kids study more. I’m keeping it because it’s practically free. To get a better price by dropping MOD, I’m going to have to buy an other ADSL multi year package that doesn’t include MOD.

It’s only ever about the money. MOD is losing money still. But with recent changes, my prediction is:

start to show more popular cable channels, axe the unprofitable ones, pursue the bigger main market, … resulting in a MOD that is more like CABLE, and less like the MOD we have right now. Suspect this is the thin edge.

MOD wouldn’t be the first business to build a niche business, get big enough to attract main stream channels, then drop the niche as fast as they can in their greedy eagerness for the main market. It will be goodbye to BBC, ITV, and a plethora of other channels we love…

Think Ebay, Bitcasa, … many many more!

I give it 3 years as contracts expire.

BBC Entertainment, 5 more days to go? The notice seems to have disappeared. Did we win? Will it be gone. Has anyone contacted the agent? How will my kids see The Doctor?

The kids will not see The Doctor anymore. Just checked and channel 77 has indeed turned dark. Not to fear, they have now added CBeebies, so the kids will not get bored anytime soon. :grimacing:

We actually watched a lot of CBeebies back in Europe and we do love their programming. But that was when the kids were little and they have sadly outgrown that stage: they’re annoying teenagers now.

And it’s gone.

There goes graham norton was watching it last nite…

EDIT- seems I watching BBC lifestyle which still has graham norton…

Now I get it: it’s not MOD that has stopped carrying BBC Entertainment, it’s the BBC that has ceased broadcasting this channel. It’s gone from their website and it now only lists BBC World News, Earth, Lifestyle, First and CBeebies. I already sent an inquiry to them on the what and how we will be able to get a similar channel like First in Taiwan.

If you like you can also contact them to let them know we miss BBC Entertainment here in Taiwan: http://www.bbcasia.com/contact/

There seems to be a new Channel that is carrying much of the programs we like on BBC entertainment. It’s called BBC first.

BBC Entertainment seems to be continuing in regions outside asia. It’s website is up and current.

Here is some factoid I learned about BBC international program in an interview program for what it’s worth.

They said that BBC international programmers like BBC Entertainment don’t automatically get the programing. They also have to bid for it . I never quite understood what that means. OK, did they give us a replacement?

I’m really happy with Nick Junior’s Replacement “Boomerang”. It’s been years since we saw the Looney Tunes and the modern are actually very good!

Yep boomerang isn’t bad at all, kids love it.
