At last something to unite all Chinese wherever they might be! The Apple Daily and The Chinese Borg have got together to tut-tut and moralise about an English blogger in China writing about (among other things) his sexual escapades.

His blog is now “invitation only”, but some snippets are available in Google’s cache, and when I get home I’ll check out the Wayback Machine.

Here is one I found amusing, and frightening:

You have to love his response to the knee jerk reaction of the predictible Defender of Chinese Dignity who is urging a man-hunt. (You can of course be sure that the same bloke has fucked plenty of his own students - when they were his students.)

This is an intersting insight into mass hysteria and the hypocrisy that sadly seems to grip Chinese people when foreigners offend them. It is even more disturbing when newspapers in Taiwan (and I will check the broader Chinese diaspora press) make common cause with these fools. Like Chinese teachers don’t fuck their students? Like the CCP doesn’t go on junkets to Macao to gamble away the country’s money and fuck whores? Purleeeze!

Of course it goes without saying that the Chinese will do as they’re told by the CCP. As soon as it is expedient to forget about Japanese war crimes, there will be no more crying in classrooms by children whose parents weren’t even born in 1945. Regardless of what Chinese people in the PRC really think (and we will never know) the outward appearance will change with the political wind.

However. When the Taiwanese, or Singaporean Chinese, or Malaysian Chinese respond to this sort of non-story with a “we are all Chinese together let’s shit on the gweilos” don’t they get it that they could be next? There will come a time when the PRC gleefully kicks out the foreign barbarians. The Taiwanese will be next. First, possibly, if Baby Chen gets his way. (At least the West has something to offer China other than slave labour management - which we invented, by the way…)

The most craven “We Are All Chinese Automatons Together” groupthink I ever saw was the Hong Kong Chinese clamouring to get the Brits out and then crapping themselves in June 1989. Sometimes I have to wonder. Surely the Taiwanese are way smarter than this? On the one hand I am told Taiwan is not part of China just because they have the same racial background, and the next thing it’s “Oh but we’re all Chinese”. Okay so this is only an Apple Daily story at present, but it will be interesting to see how it pans out. As this guy is a Brit there will of course be copious references to the Opium Wars.

Perhaps this United By Hatred phenomenon could work? But can the CCP contain the hornets’ nest it is stirring? We saw how well the CR worked. (Well, Mao would say it worked, but he was a murdering philanderer.)

The Chinese have killed more Chinese people than all the foreigners have killed added together and multiplied by a hundred. So as Chinabounder points out “When is China going to apologise to China for all the Chinese people it has murdered?”

My own final take on this is that the idea of a white man in China shagging away for all he’s worth may not be that novel to anybody - Chinese or not. Taiwanese businessmen in China are too busy sucking up to the CCP on the one hand and porking their way around the KTVs of Donghai and Dingho on the other to pass much remarks on this sort of thing. Hey and why not? Everyone else is.

I’m suprised this has only been posted to Forumosa now. It’s been bouncing around for several days now. I’ve been reading the website of the psychology instructor who has been calling for the witchhunt against them. He’s an absolute wackjob. He has several interviews with foreign women as to their opinions about dating Chinese men and asks them some really doozies like “Do all you foreign women have AIDS?” and “Do we have small dicks?”

Yeah I couldn’t believe no-one had told me about Chinabounder! Chinese racial supremacists are ten a penny, but Chinabounder is excellent fodder. (Of course, foreigners shagging Chinese girls are ten a penny too, but most keep quiet about it!)

Huh? Zhang Jiehai (张结海), is a professor, a single person who found Chinabounder’s blog and was extremely offended. So, he took action as an individual on his personal blog. If you’ve read parts of Chinabounder’s (the lecherous English professor’s) blog, I fail to see how anyone would defend him. The dude’s a major prick. I’m offended for those ladies too. He brags online about “playing with” his Chinese female students and says they are stupid…and worse. Just the kind of guy that gives foreign guys in Asia a bad name.

Yes, just like foreigners from America, Canada, Germany, England, New Zealand, South Africa, etc all band together as “we are all Westerners” when they want to complain about Taiwan or Taiwanese people.

Seriously, you boys are getting your panties in a bunch over nothing. If you actually read Zhang Jiehai’s (张结海) blog (most of it’s in Chinese for those of you who can read it), you’ll see it’s pretty harmless. Just a Chinese guy with an inferiority complex ranting about a particular type of foreign man (in China). Who can blame him? Besides, his interviews with Western women are very candid and pretty funny to read. Actually, his whole blog is an interesting read.

Before people get all hysterical about this Chinese dude’s blog, you might want to consider the amount of judging and ranting about Chinese people that goes on here.

Erhu, you have entirely missed the point. I do not believe for a minute that either Chinabounder or this “professor” actually exist. You are the one who does not really “get it”.

Now, back to the issue at hand.

It is intersting to see the degree of control over and organisation of popular protest the internet and political officers placed on campus actually provides the CCP, just as it was being mooted that the internet would break the grip of the Party on the urban young. Very hard to know how much of this reporting is actually true - it is of course possible no-one gives a damn. Don’t forget that even if this blogger exists, white foreigners have been shagging Chinese girls in Shanghai for the last ten years, and no-one really gives a damn. So far we have seen anti Japanese sentiment fanned “by the internet” and now we have a little “anti-dirty Englishman” campaign. Are these CCP orchestrated test cases actually working? Are we seeing a new substitute for the language control policies of the 1950s and 60s, (I don’t think so) or is this designed to create the excuse to further extend control of the internet to “protect public order” - but crucially this time with the blessing of the West. Notice very carefully that every possible issue that could offend was carefully inserted into that blog. Not accidental. Oh no. What is the CCP up to?

But it’s not harmless. The guy is organizing a witchhunt. Have you read through some of those comments? It’s hundreds of men spouting various threats about how they will beat him or kill him. And now they have a name. Someone’s posted that they think Chinabounder is one David Marriott, based solely I believe on some Chinese snippet that they’ve found on a website where Mr. Marriott loosely fits Chinabounder’s description (English guy, early 30’s, been in China for 5-6 years.) Is he actually Chinabounder? At this point the truth is not important. For his sake, I hope he’s already called the police, because his life is in danger.

Do foreigners spout the same sort of bigoted drivel as the instructor? Sure. But you never see them inciting a witchhunt with a very real threat to violence.

Because it’s the sort of thing I would write just to annoy people. Dunno, have to edit this post to say the more I read it the more I think it is the work of one guy. But why? Oh it doesn’t matter. He’s dead now.

But there is something unreal about the whole thing… can’t quite put my finger on it… the writing and the scene in Shanghai that he is describing seems contrived… imaginary… I don’t recognise these kinds of girls, their language, their age, the assertion they are from Shanghai (doubt it)… guys who do the man-whore thing don’t write at such length and with such effort at sounding literary… this is written by some shag-happy English teacher…? Really…? I reckon there’s a woman’s hand in there somewhere and that the latest news report is true… There is an awful lot of extrapolation going on here… it’s a wind-up of some description… (He’s also spending about Rmb20k a month on restaurants…!)
