Getting from Yilan to Hsinchu

What would be the best way to get from Yilan to Hsinchu?

I have heard about the east west Highway, but can’t find any info on it.

Do buses go on that highway?

Thanks for any info.

The best and quickest and straightest with other things like food and stores and gas along the way is obviously via the new highway 5 tunnel, to highway 3 straight down to Hsinchu.

If you drive over the mountain be prepared to spend a LONG time driving and seeing only very very few places to stop for food, gas, toilet, or water. Take your own snacks. And not only that, there isn’t really a direct route over the mountains.

Thanks tango42!

afaik, there’s a bus from the City Hall MRT station to Yilan (and the other way around obviously), although you’d have to get the MRT from there to Hsinchu. I don’t have any specific details apart from the queues tend to be really long and that they have little tents along the road that have a few staff standing around and telling people what bus goes where.

You could take a bus from Yilan to Taipei and then from Taipei to Xinzhu, but because of that transfer time, it’d just be quicker to just hop on a train and go straight there.

The train is the best way. Plenty of trains .
