Good news for US military veterans.

Anyone that isn’t aware yet, your GI bill is changing again. Two major takeaways, the expiration date is disappearing and purple heart recipients will receive 100% benefit regardless of time in service. Those that aren’t aware I’ll explain why this is such a big deal.

  1. Many veterans don’t use their GI bill benefits within the time limitations. I personally know an Army Ranger that participated in both OIF and OEF that missed out because of this.
  2. To receive full educational benefits, the individual needs to have a certain time in service. Pretty fair and simple requirement. Except, many combat veterans get separated early due to injuries sustained. With this new bill, purple heart recipients can use full educational benefits regardless of time in service.

Here’s a pretty well detailed article explaining the changes. Both positive and negative.

On an aside, nobody should be surprised the GI bill is changing. It happens pretty frequently and will happen again. Just be thankful it’s for the better, there were many times the government was considering scrapping it completely.
