Guitar shop/music store in Taipei

hot damn! i went today, not a bad selection at all, lots of nice things, but you were right about that rental price. any other ideas?

Well, as an alternative to renting a guitar, you could just buy a really, really cheap one, spend a little while on setup with allen keys and a screwdriver, and then smash it up on stage whenever you tire of it. (Or, in the alternative, there are charities that take care of kids that would probably love to receive a functional instrument.) Player sells some horribly colored Chinese-made stratcopies for a pittance, complete with gig bag, cable and strap. ATB (Tony’s) also has cheapo house-brand guitars that function. Just make sure you try out all the knobs and switches to see which ones actually work.

I have the cheapest acoustic guitar, does any one want to buy it for $1000NT???

Oh, My 2004 fender strat delux is not for sell… and don’t even think about looking at it.

There used to be loads of great guitar shops on Hoping Rd. Where did they all go?

Does this Tony’s do other instruments? Or is mostly/all guitars and band type of stuff? I’m looking for a place to get a viola. Anyone know a place that does orchestral stringed instruments? Even someone who will rent me one?

Okay! I’ve got shop list from where I can buy a guitar.
I can spend upto NT$5000, and want to buy an acoustic guitar. Any suggestions?

Try and find something used.

I would look around for a used Taylor Big Baby. These are excellent guitars for the money. They don’t look fancy, but Taylor doesn’t mess around. They know how to build guitars.

Just a heads up that Tony’s (ATB Music) is moving to Neihu.

I believe the grand opening is on the 13th August and the new address will be 文湖街88號 (88 Wenhu St). Someone who can actually read Chinese, feel free to correct me.

Thanks for the info!

BTW, you’ve got a typo there; it should be wenhu not wennu.

Wen2hu2jie1 88hao4, as you say, #88 Wenhu Street.
It says that’s at the entrance to Takming (德明 DeMing) University of Science and Technology. There’s some activity for the opening at 2 pm, apparently some kind of competition, with a prize or prizes of instruments worth more than NT$10,000.

From the map it looks like you get off at the Xi1hu2 MRT Sta,. go west 200 meters, turn north, and go 500 meters; the new location is at the “A” here:

I compiled a list of guitar shops last year. Most of the information should still be accurate.

Dun Huang Music
Corner of Nanjing and Jianguo (well, about 10 metres north on Jianguo).

Player Music
台北市金華街19號 (No.19, Jinhua St., Zhongzheng Dist., Taipei)
Best way to get there is go on the MRT to CKS Memorial Hall Station and exit at exit 3, then turn right to face the shop. It’s right by the exit.

maps.google.com/maps?q=taipei&h … 81,0,0.76

UD (Up Down) Music
ud-music.com/
(No. 40, Lane 181, Zhongxiao East Rd., Sec. 4. Tel 02 2721 3202).
Note that this place doesn’t open till 1 PM.

It’s REALLY easy to miss, so follow these directions very carefully:

Get off the MRT at Zhongxiao Dunhua, exit 1. Look around for the TKK fried chicken chain restaurant, which will be slightly to your right as you face the shops. Head there and turn left at it. Go up that lane until you are a block before you hit Civic Blvd. On your left at this corner, you will see a shop with a Teddy Bear and a “U” written on it. Go down the alley and a door or two down on your right is UD music (it’s a basement shop).

One more to add. Run by a guy called James, who speaks pretty good English. It’s a very small shop, but you can tell he really loves guitars and knows a lot about them.

Irishstu, I was just getting ready to ask about guitar shops. Thanks for paying/posting it forward!

Before I go wandering around all these shops has anyone seen any left handed electrics in any of the shops on the list?
I’ve been to up down music, who were all chatty in the shop, said they’ll contact their supplier. Never got back to me.
So anyone happen to see anything for a lefty on any of the shelves?

I checked in the shop on the corner of Jianguo and Nanjing for you at the weekend. Couldn’t see any lefties. Sorry.
