Is Forumosa too PC?

Is Forumosa too politically correct?

Discussions have taken place among the moderators (as we lounge in our Roman orgy being fanned by beautiful slaves while we eat grapes and drink wine) about the political correctness of the posts.
Is the site too sensitive about radical postings? Bad language? Defaming other posters? Posts dealing with race in a negative way? With women?
Are the moderators too quick to pull a post or ban someone?
Is the site vibrant enough?
Should the limits of taste be expanded?

PC and puritanical are not one in the same.

Excellent question to which I don’t know the answer.
But where is the option for “Not PC enough” ?
I do hope the question wasn’t loaded, nor is the term ‘PC’ loaded.

I think it was unfortunate that the “threesomes” discussion got torn apart and trashed, but a politically-correct discussion group would have left that intact while deleting some of the other threads that have been allowed to continue.

Someone suggested an “adult” forum a while back. I don’t know if that would work, since other forums I’ve seen that tried that type of thing ended up with worse problems as a result, but. . . .

These days the term “PC” is simply an insult used by people who can’t be bothered to form coherent arguments against the things to which they are opposed.

Paogao - PC has taken on this new meaning, true, but it hasn’t yet lost its original meaning which is avoidance of (or morbid fear of!) language that may be considered by some people to be offensive.
It’s a useful word to describe this phenomenon, unless you have a better one?

I think the balance here is about right. The overtly offensive stuff gets dumped. I think that individual posts could get snipped out if an otherwise innocuous thread looks like it might get torn apart by offensive posters. I’m thinking of the Threesome thread here.

I do sense a creeping sententiousness (if there is such a word) in the moderation and content of some of the recent threads, and I think that this is what Wolf may be referring to.

It must be very difficult to get this exactly right.
When I think back on some of the threads …anal sex etc it seems pretty
liberal to me.
Some of the moderator interventions have suprised me eg I remember being moved to the flame forum for using the word “pussy” while others can say eg “fuck off” wihout sensor. This may be due to differnt national views on the seriousness of particular terms.

To me the more important point in moderation is to treat everyone equally ie apply the same rules to your seasoned veterans that you apply to the less frequent or new posters.

I forgot about that one, and now that you mention it, the “pink martini” topics have gotten “stickied” to the top for no discernible reason. I guess Forumosa is rather “PC” at that.

I have a great idea. Let’s have a “Politically Incorrect” thread where people can post their most politically incorrect thoughts. It would be loads of fun.

It is currently called the flame forum. It just needs its own moderator.
I propose Blueface.

Oh, I think if you talk to anyone who knows me that they will tell you that I could moderate that, but it would be ugly.

Maybe ‘safe’ is a better question than ‘PC’. Is Forumosa too safe ? I think that is more what wolf was asking. The Sticky Martini threads were PC in the sense of catering to minorities (if you can forgive that term) but not safe in the sense of sticking to the same old safe boring topics.
These questions of Wolf’s express my curiosity perfectly : “Are the moderators too quick to pull a post or ban someone? Is the site vibrant enough? Should the limits of taste be expanded?”

Is there too much/not enough/just right flaming ?
Is there too much/not enough/just right sillyness ?

Will the opiniions of the handful of people who respond to this thread make a blind bit of difference to how this site is moderated? I seriously doubt it.
The flamers will still flame and the mods will still respond in the same way they always have.

Obviously, some forums need to keep adult topics out and certainly flaming or slurs or worse have no place in adult conversation . . . but, perhaps an adult forum would be appropriate for discussion of topics that really don’t belong in the vanilla areas . . . bisexuals, threesomes, anal sex, brothels, betel nut beauties, dian tze hua che, barber shops, felching, frottage, mopery, strip clubs, snowballing, menage a taiwan, fisting, gay saunas, non-gay saunas, french kissing, rubber stamping, sexual russian roulette, porn, and a whole bunch of stuff that youngsters and some adults probably shouldn’t be learning about.

Perhaps an adult forum that requires an age in your forumosa profile for the cookie to let you in (sure, some folks can cheat but at least the forumosa folks will have made an honest effort to restrict access to appropriate folks).

Keep it moderated to keep the sex ads, porn spam, and flames out . . . but have a lose live and let live attitude towards topic content.

I don’t think a “politically incorrect” forum would be appropriate - that really is the flame forum, but even there the moderators should watch out for real abuse. Folks come here mostly to enoy the experience and share ideas not to get stomped on or abused.

IMHO.

Despite having been zapped a couple of times myself, I think Forumosa has roughly the right balance between 100% free speech and total inoffensiveness.

There’s more possibilities than that??

BFM, I am glad that some mods will indeed adapt to the style of moderating that people prefer, and that these things do get discussed out in the open.

It’s not so cozy at other sites. Dare to question the Wizard of Oz wisdom of the mods there and you’ll find yourself booted out the door in an instant - banned, no ifs, ands or buts.

Bacially I think the moderators want to attract as broad a range of users and contributors as possible. We’re obviously unable to simultaneously please those who think that discussion of absolutely anything with absolutely any kind of language should be allowed, and those that are offended by ‘profanity’ and risque images. We just gotta go for the middle ground which covers the majority of people.

Also, the Open Forum is more open. If you’re easily offended, avoid the Open Forum. And if something gets really offensive it will probably just be moved to the Flame Forum, not deleted. So what. Flame Forum doesn’t mean we’re censoring your freedom of speech. And if something’s inane or not going anywhere, it might get moved to the Flounder Forum. Same diff. Some things are illegal. They’ve gotta be deleted to protect us form lawsuits etc. Mei banfa.

As for actually deleting posts and banning people - it’s very rare. How many people have actually been banned. About 5 I think. Let me check. OK, it’s about 12, but that’s over 3 years or so, and some were just the same person under a different alias.

Also different moderators have different standards. I don’t mind ‘bad’ language in general, but I don’t like people being really “get me some pussy” crass. That’s just me. Moderators here are not just mindless automatons blindly following an inflexible set of rules.

Finally, Spack, I really think you’re wrong in thinking that we ignore the opinions of users on how this site could be improved. At the end of the day, this whole site comes form the users.

(This is all just my opinion, not official moderator policy or anything).
