Is PIN theft from ATMs common?

So last time I went to the ATM, the bank updated their software and there is now a screen that has a picture of one hand covering the other hand that is entering the PIN. It implies you need to be careful because a camera might be watching you.

Is this justified or just paranoia? Are cameras monitoring the PIN pad really common in Taiwan?

Not as common as abroad, but every now and then on Appledaily/Taiwannews etc they mention some ATMs being used to steal pin codes. I don’t usually worry too much about it, but since I have the wallet in my hand anyway I just got used to cover my hand with the wallet while I’m typing the pin code.

I also just do this out of force of habit.

Apparently I’ve been doing it wrong then… Maybe I should start. I suppose it’s a good thing I just use the ATMs at the bank.

the scam is to have an overlay that reads the card and a camera that records your pin. It’s much more common in other countries but has been seen here.
