Island wide blackout. Major power outage, Aug. 15, 2017

Is this part of the deal??

What percentage of people have been affected or are affected by this outage? Is it every city? What about the countryside?

According to news reports, 6.7 million households were affected in some way.

There were 8.4 million households in Taiwan in 2015, so… about 80%?

Socialism for the rich

Who else would socialism be for? The poor? HA!

That’s interesting timing

Taipower has a reputation as a mega-corrupt ‘deep-state’ type organisation

I wonder would they have the audacity to stage a blackout in order to bolster the push for more nuclear power…

Sounds far-fetched but the explanation of someone ‘hitting the wrong switch’ sounds a bit weird as well

I don’t know. This is Taiwan. Someone being incompetent enough to “hit the wrong switch” seems entirely plausible. Remember the idiot who tried to disperse a gas leak with an electric fan at that restaurant in Taichung last month? Boom.

Yep, and then there was the other ‘fat-finger’ incident where someone accidentally launched a missile towards China and shot a fishing boat - so I guess it’s entirely possible - but I’d still like to hear some more details

If they wanted to bolster the push for more nuclear power, shouldn’t they just claim that the blackout was caused by power shortage instead of a human error?

No you cannot. Taiwan News has verified that it was Taiwan’s fault.

Human error causing a two-minute cutoff in the supply of natural gas to the Datan station by state-owned oil company CPC Corporation, Taiwan was blamed for the incident.

I honestly didn’t believe anyone was going to take what was obviously a satirical statement seriously, perhaps next time I should ask if I can blame space aliens sending EMP waves to Taipei.

Many area of yilan county were without power at 5. Luodong was ok. By the time I got home (7.30), most lights were restored, but some roads (even large roads next to the highway) were in the dark, as well as a few small towns here and there.

I was expecting the worst for my house in the middle of nowhere, but we had no power issues at all.

I’m.guessing all the power stats are wrong by a factor of a thousand in that article.

It’s okay though…they are only numbers right.
Probably the dude in the plant had the same attention to detail as Taiwan News staff?

PS Taiwan also has the biggest gas powered electricity plant in the world!

But why the fuck did the minister have to resign just cos some dickhead hit the wrong button? This country is so fucked up.

They offer their resignation he’ll be back at work Monday.

Is our long national nightmare over?

Sure, it doesn’t really make sense, but neither does their explanation

Apparently there’s a joke doing the rounds of the internet:

There are only 6 people in history capable of skipping at least 10 procedures to turn off a power plant:

  1. Easton Hunt 2. James Bond 3. Dom Toretto 4. Jason Bourne 5. Neo 6. An Employee of Chinese Petroleum
