Lost 18% of my CNY bonus to income tax

Is it normal to be taxed on your CNY bonus? Seems absurdly high.

Guess maybe I can claim it back in summer 2019, but I really needed the extra money now.

Yes, you’ll get it back next year at tax time. It’s just the company’s way of covering themselves in case you leave before 183 days this year.

I really try not to think about it whenever this happens. Then again, deductions happen every month, so I’m already used to it. I like that nice big lump of money coming back to me at the end of the tax year tho.

Ditto. I know “ideally” you should break even, meaning you will have a little bit more money each paycheck. But, I’d rather have it in a lump sum, kinda like a bonus. I’m not good at saving anyway.

If you can present receipts for your rent and proof you support your parents, your deductions will be higher.
