Tried this place last night. It’s counter service with a few seats, maybe like a Chipotle in the states but with much less seating. I had the fish tacos and nachos. Fish tacos were great, reminded me of SoCal. What was impressive was the soft shell. Usually they double up on the shell for fish tacos because it gets soggy and the shell will start to fall apart in your hand. Machos only uses one shell and it held up through the meal. Nachos were just so-so. They must run them through a conveyor toaster or something like that…not an oven because the cheese on the top was melted but not on the bottom and some of the edges of the chips were toasted. Cheese was kinda scarce. I would stick to tacos and maybe try the burritos next time. Definitely recommended.

Anyone got a size reference on the Boo-Reetoes?

It’s hard to tell from the picture whether they’re they’re those teeny tiny flautas-sized mini-ritos made with 6-inch tortillas or them great big fuckoff honking Portland/Frisco ones that are bigger than your damn foot.

Obviously, one’s fingers are crossed for the latter… :homer:

Oh, and I LOVE the graphic design on the website, super-cool.

Not quite the great big fuckoff ones. Somewhere in between. I remember my first great big fuckoff burrito. I was visiting Berkeley and a friend took me to this hole in the wall place and I was like, holy shit, what is that?!?!

To go along with the website, the restaurant walls are covered with lucha libre photos, it’s pretty cool.

I had crispy and soft tacos (beef, chicken and pork) on Saturday night, and they were good. Yesterday I popped in for the fish tacos, and they were fantastic! 3 hot fish tacos for $150NT and the taste is just amazing. I haven’t tried anything on the menu besides the tacos yet, but I will!

The pork tacos are only so-so. It actually tasted like chicken…maybe it was chicken. Anyways the steak tacos were awesome. Takes me right back to southern california. Its a blessing that they moved in with Yuma’s closing and all.

What are the opening hours? Whenever I’ve walked by lunchtime the metal shutter is only open half way.

As they say in the first post: “only open at night till the grand opening. 630-10.”

But I have no idea when the grand opening is.

(Oh for the semester to be over so I can get down there and try this place out…)

I guess still not yet. I went on Tuesday at lunchtime and they said they don’t open until 6:30. Bugger.

Their facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/MachoTacos) says they’re still looking for staff in order to open daytimes. Tried the nachos and the burrito (get the macho size!) last night, and they were both excellent. Finally, some real Mexican food in Taipei City.

That looks almost worth a trip to TPE. Ohh. You’re killing me!

Before you hop on the HSR for a visit, take a deep breath and say, “Wait a minute. Mexican food. In Taiwan.” Then think about it. Repeat if necessary.

Sorry to throw cold water on the hot-fire of response, but I haven’t been this disappointed in a TPE restaurant/food vendor since Amy’s Kitchen closed and/or the last time I went to Greek-Go in Shida. Now, I intend to go back and try the quesadillas but unless those knock my socks off, I gotta say: bu hao.

On the positive side:
-The girl/woman/lady working the register was as nice as can be and super cute.
-The burrito was ready in about 3 minutes, maybe less.

On the negative side:
-Ordered the carne asada Macho burrito (NT185) and “The Works” (NT30 for sour cream, cheese and guacamole) w/ the Mexican rice and black beans. The tortilla was good, the beef was marginally OK, some flavor, not dry, however, if there was sour cream, guac, or cheese in there, I didn’t see it or taste it. That’s US$7.35 for a mid-sized burrito, a bit steep, and certainly disappointing.
-They included a small cup of sauce which had zero – I mean nada – heat. A watery tomato sauce with a chunk of onion. Not a jalapeno in sight. The self-serve salsa options are a bowl of sad pico de gallo type mix, what looked like a poor imitation of kimchi (chopped lettuce? what the?), and finally, this blew my fucking mind, corn, as in whole kernel corn.

Yes, yes, I know…what do you expect? It’s Taiwan. This is the Taiwan version of Mexican food. Cool website, good location, pleasant service, but what a let-down on the food.

Sigh… I still want to try and have hope for decent Mexican food. Looks like a right after McDonalds, second right, then on the right.

To each his own, but $215NT for a steak burrito with even a drop of sour cream, guac and cheese in it seems pretty decent price to me in Taiwan, as just around the corner Yuma was charging 90NT for a 2oz cup of guacamole. Not mention Amy’s was 350NT for a large, albeit ground beef burrito, whilst $290 for pulled pork burrito at Yumas that was half the size? 210NT for same thing at Oola and no sour cream, cheese, guac, and much smaller. I know, Taiwan, Taiwan…Ok then, a carne asada burrito with no beans, rice or sour cream cost me almost 6bucks at Roberto’s in Carlsbad. A 1 dollar premium to get a carne asada burrito here in Taipei, I’ll take it.

Also 250NT won’t even buy you a seat with an omelette and drink at the Diner, Evan’s, etc, but I digress…

Did you ask for the superhot sauce? I know they have a hot sauce for gringos but it’s not on their line as they use a green salsa, red salsa and pico on line and customers usually ask for the hot stuff. They may be kicking it up a notch too as many people like you and I want something spicier. I had some fresh salsa they just made with chocolate and golden bullet habeneros (which I say them make as I was in there early) so it was plenty spicy for me.

Uhh…never had cabbage salsa or corn salsa buddy? It’s not just Taiwanese that eat corn, in Mexico I heard it’s called maize and they make a lot of things with it, quite common in California and the West coast too, where Kimchi is also served on tacos! My lord the abomination!! welcome to last year buddy :bravo:

For my two cents, still legit baja mexican taco joint in taiwan, when they are fully open I’m sure all the kinks will be worked out.

Also VERY worth mentioning is the fact that all of the tables have Cholula hot sauce on them, which is (in my opinion) the best hot sauce out there. Who cares if the house salsa’s mild when you’ve got Cholula?
Also, you’re shocked by the corn? Ever been to a Mexican restaurant? Nothing Taiwanese about it.

Had dinner there the other night. Some hard shell beef tacos and some soft shell pork tacos; $140 for three.

So-so but they are trying. Think I’ll have to try again before passing any other judgement.

One of my [strike]very favorite things[/strike] least appreciated things about Forumosa occurs when people respond to a field report (or review) in a defensive pose and ask rhetorical questions of the OP. So the blanket answer to your (and taipeigooch’s) questions is NO – with tongue planted firmly in cheek… I have never been to a Mexican restaurant. I had no idea that Mexicans were fond of corn. Hell, what is this crazy tortilla thing? I didn’t spend the last 20 years of my life prowling the Mission District for decent empanadas, tortas, chorizo and mole. (Wait, yes I fucking did). The answer to just about any of your questions will be NO, for fuck’s sake. Was I supposed to list my credentials as a Californian before I posted my review? Oh, I’m sorry.

Meanwhile, I’m aware of the Korean/Mexican fusion happening in L.A. and I find it about as interesting (and delicious) as reading these retorts. Macho Tacos is no fucking taco truck on Wilshire Blvd. You may happen to love Cholula, I think it’s pure shit. So instead of picking apart the review of my experience, why don’t you tell everybody about your great experiences at Macho Tacos? I wasn’t reviewing Yuma and I wasn’t talking about Oola. You can keep last year. And fuck Carlsbad.

They are open for lunch now. Was there today and had a chicken burrito with the works. Filling and delicious for around $180 I think. I’ll be back.

I went last Friday. Might not be the fanciest or the most authentic, but it’s definitely value for money.

Tried to go today, but found that the metal door was half pulled down and a hand scrawled notice put up - “starting today, we’re closed every Tuesday for training sorry.”

Great. What a waste of time.
