So the first movie club event will be going down this coming Friday. Hopefully, I won’t be the only beer drinker for the night (even I can’t down 24 cans of Taiwan Beer in one night.)

Vote on the movie of choice, or post your suggestion. I can run to blockbuster if you want to see some down to earth pimpness like “The Life Aquatic” or something. I have a decent collection of movies that all get 5 stars after 6 cars of beer.

The way it’ll work is message me so you can get me cell number, then call and I’ll pick you up from Dingxi Exit #2 (that’s one stop south of Kuting on the yellish-orange line.)

uh… yeah, it’s open to pretty much anyone.

Let the viewings begin.

I suggest that we look at the AFI top 100 best movies.

Then there are other personal faves to add. It would also be nice to start off the movie with some background information about the movie. Maybe a discussion about the director, actors, etc. I’m a movie buff. Not everyone may be open to it but it’s an idea I hope that is taken in consideration.

For example, a viewing of Eyes Wide Shut. MTK and I had a discussion about this movie a while back. He had discovered that this was a thinly veiled dipiction of the Illiuminati and their activities. I think watching a movie like that along with discussion of the idea behind the movie would add something to the event.

Any thoughts?

Yes. Just one for now.
I want to watch Dolemite.

Discussion after copious amounts of beer is a great idea

Oh, and just bringing snacks/beverages is fine. No need for the 200NT cover charge (unless you want to touch my cowboy hat)

Note: Actually, there is not charge for hat touching. I might even let you wear it if you’re nice.

Is that you after imbibing a case of Taiwan Beer?

Nah, just took that like 10 minutes ago. It was a reenactment of sorts.

That’s a great idea.

Nothing over two hours in length. I’d rather watch two 90 minute movies than sit through one 3 hour snoozefest.

I looked through my modest collection, and here’s what I have (it ain’t much)…

Brazil: the Criterion Collection 3-disc set with Terry Gilliam’s 142-minute final cut, a “Battle of Brazil” documentary (based on book of same title, about Gilliam’s struggle to get his film released), Stoppard & McKeown discussing the script, and the 94-minute “Love Conquers All” version - the one edited for television against Gilliam’s wishes.

Also have Madadayo, Children of Heaven, Marat/Sade, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, the Criterion anthology of Stan Brakhage films, and everything by the Coen Brothers. If you like anime, I have Akira, Grave of the Fireflies, and Barefoot Gen (all with English audio). Somewhere I have a really beat up copy of Spinal Tap. And Hard Boiled.

I know this is the “movie” club, but I do have a few other odds and ends like The Complete Monty Python (+ Life of Python documentary), Def Poetry seasons 1-2, Space Ghost 1-3, Sponge Bob 1-3, Chappelle’s Show 1, Sealab 2021 1, and Ken Burns’ Jazz.

And I just missed recording The Warriors the other night on cable. “Warriors, come out and play-ee-ayyyyy…”

Oh, just a thought, but bus service ends at 11:30ish and the MRT leaves the final station at 12:00 (I think.)

Dolemite runs 91 minutes. Starting at 8:30 could have you out the door at 10:30 or so if needed. I don’t mind having people hang about until later though.

Yes. Just one for now.
I want to watch Dolemite.[/quote]

Dolemite is fine. But it would be cool to discuss how Blacksploitation films came to be. And their current affect on straight to video current blacksploitation films i.e. gansta films that are funded by rappers. If anyone is interested in this sort of information, I would be willing to gather a short anology. You know something fun, but insightful.

Then we should watch Baadasssss!
In fact, I just gave it to miltonkid today.

Now that would be great as that is the beginning of Blacksploitation film making. Good for you

I also would be willing to being some guacamole.

I noticed that a few people voted for porn. If that’s the case, umm, lets just be up front and call it a boy’s night out.

So, will the MTK have to drink beer each time he says the words “pimp” and “ho”?

That’s what goes down on a usual Friday evening.

SEXIST!!! you don;t know how the boys and girls voted!!! :stuck_out_tongue: Tho it proabably was ‘de men’… but still … you never know, I hear tell some girl like (gasp) porn.

Well in that case, I’ll be the chips. :howyoudoin:

You’re gonna have to pass on that guacamole. I’m gonna have to bow out.

So has a final decision been made about the movie?
I would like to go, with one partner. Is there anything that one needs to go read up on in order to join a discussion? Any homework?
Thanks for organising this, Miltownkid.

One partner is fine. I think that puts the total to like 6 or 7.

Maybe a little reading through his Wikipedia entry would do some good: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolemite .
