STAR WARS ROGUE ONE Discussion Thread

This is a little late, but who else was nerding out to the “new” Rogue One trailer?

It looks kind of too Hollywood with some better known cast members like Donnie Yen, but nonetheless, still extremely excited.

I’m gonna watch it just because it’s Star Wars. But it doesn’t look like the Star Wars movie I want at all.

If you want, “The Incomparable” podcast has a two-hour episode talking about the trailer. (That’s not overkill at all, is it?)

I’m more excited “Rogue One” than I was about “The Force Awakens”, but that’s purely because last year’s film was actually good, unlike the previous three films in the franchise.

And when I watch this trailer, part of me thinks “Yay! Lando isn’t the only non-white human in the galaxy!”, and another part of me thinks “Oh god I hope the Asian characters aren’t just pandering to the China market.”

It would be a shame if the quality of the Star Wars franchise got diluted by such cynical commercialism

It has been like that since epidose 5. After “A New Hope” there had been lots of complaints regarding the lack of racial diversity, and Lucas in “The Empire Strikes Back” immediately added an important black character (Lando) and suddenly there were black and asian X-Fighter pilots. Samuel L. Jackson in the prequels was there only for the marketing appeal (and turned out to be one of the worst casting decisions ever, SLJ is a good actor but not when he spends all the time calmly talking about politics).

I’m not excessively excited about Rogue One, but it can’t be worse than the prequels, so bring it on. I don’t think I’ll go to the cinema immediately though, I’ll probably wait for some reviews.

Erm… Darth Vader? Important black character.

Stop white-washing Star Wars!

There’s even complaints about race in Star Wars? I always thought a galaxy far far away was had freedom to do whatever they wanted and live in peace.

Oh wait…

Nerd chills

Anyone see it? Any good or did Disney give us Star Wars fans shit

Enjoyed it. Respectable but not great; I saw “Force Awakens” a second time within a week, but I won’t be doing that this time. Far better than the prequel trilogy, but not as good as 4 through 7. They’re setting it up as similar to the Marvel movies: consistently solid but not necessarily great.

At least the (many!) references to the Holy Trilogy aren’t quite as ham fisted as they were in 1-3. Solid cast, solid effects, some great shots (but missing a couple of the best from the trailer!), iffy writing.

Peter Cushing is back. That was unfortunate. Deep deep deep into the uncanny valley.

If you’re a Star Wars fan, you’ll probably enjoy it. If you’re not a fan, don’t bother.

My wife grew up in the "post sTar wars " era. And I saw the last one and frankly I am tired of the whole star wars thing.

It’s time to put the whole thing to bed.

not a fan anymore

The very first one was the cat’s meow. All the later ones that came after was a fur ball.

I wish they would do more jedi stories outside of the skywalkers, Like for me qui gon jinn is one of the most interesting jedi’s. There are lots of interesting jedi’s, I wish they go back in the timeline show their stories, but I guess maybe that would only catch hard core star wars fans.

I liked it. Empire Strikes Back is still the all-time best. This one is much more of a war film than any other in the franchise; it really puts the “wars” into Star Wars. It does a nice job of connecting to Episode IV and answers some long-standing questions. That said, it could have used more character development. And the music is totally unmemorable.

I can’t make much more in the way of comments without spoilers.

Really? That’s the only thing I didn’t like about the film. The sound/feel of the movie wasn’t very…John Williams. Not saying that was a bad thing, but if I had to pick something bad about it, I would pick the music.

Other than that, I liked it.

Fav scene has to be when…

Rebels are aiming at a dark area in the ship’s corridor and you see Vader’s saber light up. Nergasm. I was thinking, first Star Wars movie with no lightsabers? Proved wrong!

That’s because the score wasn’t handled by john williams this time 'round. Michael Giacchino composed for Rogue One.

Btdubs - Really dug the movie. We knew going in it was going to be tragic, but even so… They totally made us care.

Anyone else think the CG version of peter cushing still looks sorta video gamey? Took me out of it a little.

The man behind Up and Star Trek soundtracks. Great composer and good music, but still lacking the John Williams magic. I’ve been listening to the Rogue One OST on Spotify and I can say that I do really love how he doesn’t overuse the main themes in his songs.

I wasn’t going to say it until someone else mentioned, but it hurt most when…

Riz Ahmed’s character, Bodhi Rook/the pilot got blown into oblivion. He was such a lovable character.

When you think about it, yes, but I think the CGI was done pretty well. It was good that we didn’t get too many long close ups of him, otherwise it would’ve felt too video game-y.

I’ve been reading so many mixed reviews.
I have some friends who consider it as good as The Force Awakens. Other people and online websites consider it utter trash.
Today Red Letter Media released their review, and they basically say that it’s a fan service movie with very little in terms of story/characters.

I’m really struggled, not sure if it will be worth spending mah moneyz.

Reading reviews is where you went wrong Ibis!

Everyone has different approach, but personally, I think reading reviews ruins movies. I always think, low expectations no matter how much I have been anticipating the movie or how big of a blockbuster it is. This way, I’m more likely to enjoy the movie because I…don’t have expectations!

I very rarely go to cinemas because $$$, so for those few releases that may interest me I like to wait for some reviews, just to avoid spending money on a piece of garbage 8(

I was VERY worried about episode7 because 1/2/3 basically raped my soul, but after the positive reviews I decided to give it a go and I enjoyed it a lot.

Interesting, I would think it’s the other way around. If you see a lot of movies, you tend to read reviews and try to save money for good movies.

However, if you’re an SW fan. I think it’s worth a watch.

Nothing will be worse than EP1-3.
