Taiwan-born national, Which visa for spouse?

I was born in Taiwan, have US citizenship, and a recent Taiwan passport with ID number. My husband and I want to live in Taiwan. Which resident visa can my husband apply for (ARC, JFRV)?? I’m not a Taiwan citizen so I’m not sure if my husband can apply for a JFRV. Would it be wiser that my husband apply for a visitors visa, then we get married in Taiwan, then apply for a visa? Any advice is appreciated!

Doesn’t having a Taiwan passport and an ID number mean you have citizenship?

I would think that the only thing you need to make sure of is where your household registration is because that is where your spouse’s status will be recorded.

As above two posters said, this means a Taiwanese citizenship…

If you don’t need to get a permission to enter/exit/reside in Taiwan, that means you are a national(citizen) having household registration. Otherwise, you also need to get a residence permit beside your spouse.

OK thanks. I thought I had to renounce the US citizenship to be a true Taiwan citizen.

Just use your Taiwan passport when you arrive in Taiwan and they won’t even know you are a US citizen. My mom leaves the US with her US passport and switches to her TW passport when she gets here.

That’s only if you start as a foreigner (and are non-outstanding, as they say).

You will find that some people split hairs about how to translate the term, so to be precise you’re an ROC national with household registration.

Thanks everyone for your help! I was getting confused with all the categories like NWOHR, NWHR, citizen and needed clarification.

Now have to start the drudgery of getting all the paperwork together. Will be interesting doing this with my very limited knowledge of Chinese (this could be another thread), although I can get my mom in the United States or her relatives in Taiwan to help me.

Hi @mashimaro,

How did it go with you and your husband’s quest to live in Taiwan? Which visa forms and documents did you have to use and provide so your husband can live in Taiwan with you? I clicked on the link URL posted by @tando, but I can figure out which application plus document requirements to download.

I just found out yesterday, via Forumosa and another online support forum that I’ve been a Taiwanese citizen all along. I was originally searching on how to restore my Taiwanese citizenship after being an US citizen for decades, so all of this is new and exciting to me.

I still have to get my Taiwan passport renewed via mail as the TECO in my area is closed like all other TECO in the US.

Thanks in advance for any help and guidance you can impart.

The covid19 situation is making things more complicated, but if we ignore it, i think you would do the following things

In the US
You: renew your passport
Your spouse: get a visitor visa. It should be the one that can be converted to a resident visa.

In Taiwan
You: reactivate your hukou
Your spouse: apply for a resident visa as a foreign spouse of a citizen

You may check required documents in this instruction. Maybe some must be prepared while you are in the US.

Hi @tando,
Thank you for a quick and thorough response. This is much appreciated!

Stay safe.

If I have NWOHR passport can my spouse get a resident visa?

If you have a residency, yes.

Do you know where I can find the information on that? Is there a link?

Instruction on residency of NWOHR is here.

Sorry to bother you again, this is for my spouse, is that the correct link?

I have a NWOHR passport and looking to get a resident visa for my husband.

You need to have a residency. And, at this moment, due to COVID-19, resident visa is issued only for special cases.
