If your employer sent you to non-educational businesses for those speeches, it was completely legitimate, labor-wise.
Tax-wise, speeches/lectures (and written articles and other things) are exempt for the first $180,000/year. There is an official interpretation that says you can’t disguise a teacher’s salary as lecture fees, but the wording is a tiny bit vague.
