Tips for Yanshui Fireworks Festival

Hi,

I’m headed to Taiwan in February for a few weeks and would really like to go to the Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival.

From what I’ve read, full protective fire resistant gear (including motorcycle helmet) is necessary to take full part in the festival.

  1. Does anyone know if there are places in Yanshui where I can rent or buy protective gear. Most concerned about being able to get a motorcycle helmet.

  2. Any recommendation for affordable accomodations for one night in Yanshui?

If you plan to stay 50m away from the procession, you probably don’t need to wear protective gear. Any closer you will have to protect yourself.

They used to sell second hand full cover helmets for 200 NTD around the festival. So I guess if you really don’t need it afterwards, you can put it near a recycle bin when you are done.

I would suggest you invest in disposable lining beforehand, so your hair and head don’t have to touch the inside of the helmet.

You also need a very thick jacket that can be tightened around the wrist and waist. You can also wrap something around the openings after putting the jacket on. Same goes for pants and shoes.

You also need ticket gloves. Typically people put on two pairs of cotton gloves.

However, with all that there’s still no guarantee you wouldn’t get hurt. It’s a matter of luck. I’ve heard people made thick cardboard shields and the fireworks went through it.

There are also a bunch of hotels right across from Xinying (新營) train station.

I’ve never stayed at any of these. I see a lot of recommendations for The Poetry Road. However, for an event like this, you’d be lucky to find a room at any place on short notice.

Where exactly is the very central location for the fireworks activities? I can only find general information. Is there a corner, cross street, or some landmark?

They also sell fire resistant material that you can tape around your helmet to prevent fireworks from going up in it at the festival. You also might want to bring a towel to protect your neck and prevent stray fireworks from going up in the helmet.

Where exactly do the fireworks happen?

They start at a temple someplace in the area. You cannot miss it. There is a huge battery of fireworks aimed at the crowd. You will see it.

That is the starting point. Then there is a procession where they have varying sizes of fireworks going off through the night. Around 10:30-midnight, there is another huge one someplace at a different temple. I don’t remember where though.
