Tourist sim card in the US?

II saw that when i went to thailand they were selling tourist sim cards that last the time of your stay. I’m heading to the US, but I don’t have a car so I was thinking of Ubering around if I needed to get to place to place. I have a 台灣大哥大 phone. I saw some could but needed to be unlocked. Anyone have experience with this in the US?

Andrew, check out this thread. I had similar issues when I went back to the states.

It sucks that Taiwan’s network providers charge a butt load for roaming, otherwise I wouldn’t have had these issues.

Your carrier usually ain’t the one locking your phone. If you have an iPhone, you might need to have it unlocked. Most Android phones aren’t locked.

I’m also landing in LAX, i’m guessing no luck with that airport selling sim cards? Also, did you use an iPhone?

I’m guessing since I got it at the store at 台灣大哥大, my iphone is locked.

I was on Android. I’m not sure if an iPhone bought here in TW is unlocked, but according to hansioux, it may be locked.

You can try buying the SIM card here in TW:

Man this is such a hassle, can anyone confirm if taiwan mobile’s iphone is locked?

Also, does Unlocking your phone mess things up currently. I’m pretty sure there are stores that unlock it here.

Thanks, I leave friday night and I was able to stay at my cousins but his dad had heart surgery yesterday so he may not be back. I don’t have a car and i’m going for a wedding so it’s going to be a lot of stuff where i need my phone to work otherwise I wouldn’t care if it was just a normal vacation.

Check this quick tutorial to check via your IMEI#

::EDIT::

Uber will save you, but if you want to have your own freedom (and to show the gf around town), you can consider looking into renting a car with TURO. I had a pretty good experience with the app and the guy I rented from.

I booked with this and this vehicle

All phones in Taiwan are sold unlocked. When I travel to the US, I go the phone store and get a sim card. There are many choices. Tmobile has the easiest customer service, but I’ll choose Verizon next time because of their network coverage in the places I go.

The problem is that my licence expired. So I can’t I doubt they would let me rent a car.

Really, I read on another thread that they are all locked. Can anyone confirm this?

Bleeeeegh, sorry I forgot you posted that thread a few weeks ago.

Look for your IMEI# on your iphone and input it into that second link I shared, it should tell you whether it’s locked or unlocked.

The link made me pay and when I tried to it didn’t work lol. But someone else has told me phones in Taiwan’s are all unlocked.

Ok, let’s hope they ship next day. I guess worst case I can get it once I get there.

I purchased a USA SIM in Taipei and used in the USA last year. Here’s my information and Report. It works great and was on as soon as I landed in the USA.

It worked out better for me than buying a SIM card in the USA which I have done before but tends to be more complicated and can get expensive. This SIM card is basically a flat rate, can extend online with credit card, is usable immediately upon arriving in USA and is simple to pick up in Taipei even with basic ID.

Thanks. I saw that it took 3 days to activate? I’m going to go there now if that’s the case

3 days max. Mine was on when I landed only 2 days later.
