Truck plows into Christmas market in Berlin

Yes if they cordoned off the WHOLE of Berlin they would certainly have caught him in their net by now.

Wonder why they haven’t thought of this yet?

Alos were they 100% positive that it was a middle eastern immigrant (not that that narrows down things a huge amount in a multicultural city like Berlin)?

The police have gone through the forensic evidence and found another lead. Fortunately they are doing it the right way.

Your first option would provide the best chances of success, but those poor polizei are unfortunately stretched a little thin at this point in time, what with all those super-friendly “asylum seekers” and their newly acquired taste for loose German lasses. How dare they walk around in public without a male chaperone! They must be asking for it!

Of course they can’t be 100% positive that the perp was someone of Middle Eastern extraction, but I think it’s safe to assume that the probability is well over 50%. Berlin may be a very multicultural city, but when it comes to terror attacks, the multicultural spectrum can be narrowed down pretty quickly.

Well the current suspect is a Tunisian (and I agree that middle eastern profiling might help somewhat but forensics evidence is best…as has happened in this case…breaking news)

Bam! Called it! Of course, forensic evidence helps for confirmation.

So, they’ve got the guy’s ID papers. Why don’t they show a photo of him and/or give out his name so people know who to look for?
What am I missing?

Seems like he has three different names.
I’m wondering if they think it’s a ruse.
It’s a bit obvious to just leave the ID behind.

There’s something badly wrong with the system when he’s known to have multiple used false names and IDs and was never deported back to Tunisia. Security fail.

This all sounds fishy …

Seriously, after 1 1/2 days they found the ID under the driver’s seat while questioning the pakistani guy ?
Howe about the gun ? Maybe they will find it tomorrow under the other seat (lol).

Why it took them so much time to release such an essential information ?

And yet again, this “new” guy apparently has used 8 (!!) different names,
what the hell is going on in my country ?
How this can be even possible with fingerprinting etc ?

Needless to mention this “new” guy has also committed crimes. His case already was
denied and he even was in detention for deportation, but apparently he escaped somehow and dissapeared.

Yes, yes, three names . . . 8 names . . .
When do we get to see ONE photo of the suspect?
I think that would help catch him.

And a comforting message from Berlin’s chief of police:

Speaking at a press conference hosted by Michael Müller, Berlin’s socialist-left mayor, the city chief of police Klaus Kandt refused to answer questions from assembled press about Islamic terror, remarking: “We have to keep a complete open mind, it could have been a drunk driver crashing”.

It’s good to know that the municipal authorities have their shit together.

Yeah, I’m afraid there’s sth. completely wrong with that country.

Sorry for interrupting as an outsider, but for me as a German living there this is of course really sad and getting on everyones nerves here.

But I’m sure … WE CAN DO IT!

:rage:

The events in Berlin are sad, and awful.

But as a forumosan–and as a visibly marked outsider living here in Taiwan–I find many comments posted in this thread are also awful. The casual calls for racial profiling etc seem to come very easily to some fellow forumosans. Perhaps you are unaware of the damage this has done to many people’s lives, including fellow forumosans. And perhaps, too, you have forgotten that your body is marked here as an immigrant, temporary worker, or naturalized citizen. You may be happy holding the gun, but next time you might be the target.

Peace to all,
Guy

I think we can’t compare the situation with Taiwan , Guy.

Europe has suffered attack after attack over the last few years almost all from migrants or connected to migrants from Islamic world.

Also many of the migrants in the EU are illegal migrants and have been involved in criminality if not outright terrorism.

Germany made a massive mistake with its open door policy and it also damaged the security and cohesion of other European states. It’s literally blowing back in Germany’s face now nobody wanted to see that but that’s what’s happening.

If they wanted to take in migrants they should have created a legal formal process JUST for Germany to take them in.

I am not arguing that Taiwan and Germany are interchangeable.

I am instead suggesting that right-wing calls here on forumosa for racial profiling and other illiberal measures are inconsistent with our interests as permanant residents/temporary workers/naturalized citizens in our new homes.

Incidentally, I hope very much that Europe gets its act together–and soon.

Peace to all,
Guy

Compartmentalization ad absurdam. Nothing has any relevance to anything in this non-interconnected world of ours. It’s all just atoms and the void.

A more sensible approach is to acknowledge that criminals are the cause of crime, and attack the problem at its cause.

The issue here isn’t that this perp was brought in. Nothing wrong with that at all. The issue is that another perp hasn’t been brought in yet. Lock them all up and be done with it, sez me.

And stop letting more in.

Does profiling oversimplify? Compared to what? Is that unfair? Compared to what?

Now this talk of widows and orphans? That there is stereotyping.

Groups don’t get profiled for no reason. No one in Germany is profiling Chinese, for instance.

Anyway though, your conclusion is based upon false premises, I believe. It depends upon what people want. You seem to be arguing that the thing that people here want is some sort of freedoms. Perhaps people would prefer order and social cohesion. This is a mistake that people often make when asking why people in various non-Western nations, particularly Singapore, could be quite happy with rules or laws that we might find objectionable.

Here’s one that you might have trouble wrapping your head around. I’d rather there only be 1% Westerners in Taiwan (and for them to be higher quality Westerners, of course) and have absolutely no say in the lawmaking process in Taiwan than for there to be 20% Westerners in Taiwan and for us to have a say in the lawmaking process.

Why? Because if 20% of the population of this country were Western and got to vote, there’d be absolute chaos from the resulting social friction/clash of civilisations as a bunch of sandal wearing kindergarten teachers tried to insist that their values were the best values (the familiar theme between liberalism and Islam, of course, is intolerant universalism). Then a whole lot of freedoms and general quality of life would go out the window without anyone even realising it. Screw that for a joke. I realise which side my bread is buttered on here in Taiwan.

The German/European model is failing badly. I wouldn’t wish that on any country. Anyone with any common sense can see that this trajectory leads to a continent style civil conflict within two decades at most (but probably much sooner). You couldn’t get me to visit Europe right now, let alone move there. It’s tragic because it is the repository of many of the works of the greatest civilisation that has ever existed and many may well be lost when it all collapses.

Do you mean European civilization, Germanic civilization, or something more specific? (Simple curiosity btw.)

German culture (not sure I’d call it a separate civilisation) is a subset of broader European civilisation, though German culture has been an extremely important and central part of that through its very numerous and important contributions to both the arts and sciences.

Epic security fail:

Europe’s unicorn-mounted police need to wake up and smell the jihad.

German authorities knew this guy was a terrorist, but they “couldn’t deport him because he had no valid papers proving his nationality.” You can’t make this shit up.

That’s the reason why most roms/gypsies are basically allowed to steal and rob stuff everywhere in Europe. When they get a police warning they pretty much use it to light up a fire.

As for the terrorist, not long ago in the UK there was a massive ring of pedophiles from Pakistans. Police received many reports but they didn’t investigate into it immediately for fear of being called racists. Germany and Sweden are following a similar path, banning the police from mentioning the nationality of a criminal if he’s not local, closing an eye on migrants because racism etc etc.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Merkel’s reaction was to introduce some truck-safety regulations. Afterall it was the truck that killed people, not the guy behind the wheel, right?
