What is happening to the USD/TWD exchange rate?

TWD seems reasonable…An even better hedge would be bitcoin or gold or real estate etc.

I thought it’s because the government has been trying to weaken NTD for years to help export market. But there’s only so much you can do…

No choice to let it strengthen.

Didn’t this start with Trump bellowing about currency manipulation and the like?

Guy

The US has been threatening to label Taiwan as a currency manipulator but it has not yet made it to official designation.

Blame the FED

The US can go around accusing other countries of manipulating currencies when the US does the same.

I guess because the country is drowning in debt so they must debase their currency to reduce their debt burden.

I wish people would read more about modern monetary theory. Or just look at the fact that throughout US history, a balanced budget has lead to MASSIVE inflation and/or recessions within a decade or two. The US budget is not your family budget. It does not need to be balanced where you make sure you put 30% aside for retirement each month or you’ll be screwed in a few years/decades. The US is not “drowning” in debt. People buy up US debt the same way people buy up stocks in companies and bitcoin and what have you. The US dollar has always been something people see as reliable, thus people across the globe consider it to be a safe investment. You buy up US debt and you help to fund the building of roads and the US military (since that’s where the vast majority of government money goes). It’s amazing how many people who would suffer terribly if the rest of the world lost faith in the USD love to run around spitting on it.

TLDR: YOU can drown in debt. I can drown in debt. The United States government cannot drown in debt.

If that’s the case then why they claim they can’t afford universal healthcare, actually fixing roads and stuff, etc.?

Because all the government has to do to is sell more bonds right? I mean the US won’t have universal healthcare because they can’t afford it, so sell bonds.

If the US can’t drown in debt then they can afford to end homelessness right now. Give everyone a UBI of 1000 dollars a month, etc. because all it takes is for Congress to keep raising the debt ceiling.

:joy:. Because the same people crying about the national debt are the same people who pay absolutely NOTHING in taxes while having hundreds of millions of dollars (or more) in assets while the average middle and lower class American is paying 20% or more of their measly paycheck to Uncle Sam, who turns around and funds garbage scams like FoxConn.
Because welfare for people who work at McDonalds is unacceptable but welfare for multi-million dollar companies to get free money from the government to build their shiny new office building or fake factory or shopping mall “creates jobs” and thus is “helping the community”, even as those corporations also often get decades of tax-free revenue and don’t create any meaningful jobs while the average American still pays at least 20% of their measly income in taxes and the rich continue to not only pay nothing in taxes but collect all the money that could have gone towards ending homelessness and proving everyone with universal basic income.

All the US government would need to do to give everyone UBI of 1000 dollars/mo would be to tax the rich and the corporations the same way they tax people making less than 40k/yr. They wouldn’t need to raise any debt ceiling.

But you forget one thing. The US is not a democracy or even a republic, heck its constitution don’t mean anything anymore (as they start making exceptions to who it applies to since the start of the 20th century).

The US is a corporate oligarchy who basically only listens to the rich. The rich sets policies. When a bunch of lion votes against a bunch of sheep on what to have for dinner, you can bet it would never end well for the sheep.

Especially when bribery is legal in the US (in the form of lobbying).

Exactly. So it’s not that the US doesn’t have the money to pay for those things, only that the rich make sure they can stay on top

I hope they understand history, because when the people are oppressed long enough, it does not end well for the country.

If the rich don’t want a US Socialist Party then they would do well to keep the people happy.

Well every country has limited resources. If they pay for those stuff they inevitably have to cut funding for something else or tax more. Either way something’s gotta give.

Except in normal countries the rich is expected to pay their fair share, but in the US the rich pays basically no tax.
