100 year aniversary of the start of WW1

Today is the 100 year anniversary of the beginning of the Great War (97th if you’re an American :unamused: )…

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there’s some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England…

Aye, and I’m young enough to have missed the action but blessed to have knowed some of the old buggers who had served and survived.

God rest their weary souls.

They were good men.

They were lucky men by all accounts.

"Just as a thousand years ago the Huns under their King Attila made a name for themselves, one that even today makes them seem mighty in history and legend, may the name German be affirmed by you in such a way in China that no Chinese will ever again dare to look cross-eyed at a German.”

–Kaiser Wilhelm II, 1900, on sending German troops to suppress the Boxer Rebellion. This is the origin of the “Hun” slur.
