2 things: plug converter + tourbook

a) Last night I was going to plug my laptop in when I realized: HORRORS, they don’t have the “3 prong” outlet here, only the 2 prong. Where can I find a converter? At any convenience store, or do I have to search harder?

b) I also need to find a “cheap” tourbook in English about the Taipei and Taichung areas. My family is from Taichung, but they’re not very helpful about where the “trendy areas” or where “so and so” is. I’m living in Taipei for awhile so I need a tourbook asap, since none of my family is really familiar with Taipei (even those who live in Taipei strangely enough). Anyway, I’ve checked out Sogo and Chung-yo department stores in Taichung, but all I could find were NT$700+ books. If anyone knows of any tourist stores, etc that sells this kind of thing, please tell me, thanks!

a) Goto any 10NT store (usually located at your local night market) and they sell those plug adapters for…10NT each. Ugly orange but who cares.

b) I’ll suggest ya one better. Get a “cheap” guide. Or at least in Taipei, go down to any MRT station and ask for the english MRT map. On the backside, it lists all the touristy places. For the trendy places, depends on your preference. The people here should be able to help ya out on that score. Sorry can’t help ya much in TaiZhong. I just went to the Feng Yuan (sp?) University night market and the science museum. Oh yeah a couple other shopping strips.

Good luck!

Electrical stores (Daiichi, 3C, Quan Guo Dian Zi etc.)

What about the Lonely planet guide? I’m not sure how expensive it is though.

For Taipei, I know a few places…what type of places are you looking for?

wow, someome replied so much later! I got the plug thingie… and the Lonely Planet guide is so expensive it makes me cringe when I think of the price. (yes, I have Taiwanese mentality of cheapness… I get it from my dad). I got a guide that was “Cultural Map of Taipei” or something like that and a subway guide. I guess that’s good enough for now. I just wish more of the guides here were bilingual.
