We hold a singing contest for the coming “2009 International Folk Music Festival in Hengchun” and are searching for foreigners who reside in Taiwan and are interested in performing folk music with musicians from all over the world. Please see the details below:
『2009 International Folk Music Festival in Hengchun』Application Information about Singing Contest for Foreigners
- Origin and Purpose:
Pingtung is abundant in natural resources and has always been considered as a good place to take a vacation. Nevertheless, in addition to the beautiful natural scenery, the historical Hengchun City Walls, the religious Cianggu ceremony (where they have a Grappling with Ghosts Competition) and the Bluefin Tuna Festival, we also plan to hold an international art festival to provide our residents and tourists with a diversified artistic and cultural activity.
The “2009 International Folk Music Festival in Hengchun” will explore and conserve the traditional music of Taiwan and give it a brand new vitality. Meanwhile, we will introduce more excellent international folk music performance troupes which perform with “chants”. Through comparing these similar types of performances, each unique culture will be presented with great respect. Our purpose is to make Pingtung become an exchange platform for global folk music and help Taiwan become a stage for all poetic folksingers in the world.
- Application and Regulations:
“2009 International Folk Music Festival in Hengchunl”
Singing Contest for Foreigners will be held at various non-official performance venues
◎ Qualifications:

Any foreign performance troupe or individual who comes to Taiwan for tourism or performance in August-Sept. 2009 (Performers should be able to sing or play their country’s folk songs or be able to play any special musical instrument from their country. Musical instruments need to be prepared by the performers.)

Any foreigners who live or work here or come to Taiwan because of marital relationship (Performers should be able to sing or play their country’s folk songs or be able to play any special musical instrument from their country. Musical instruments need to be prepared by the performers.)

Any foreign performance troupe that belongs to a legal agent company or group (any invited foreign performance troupe should be able to sing or play their country’s folk songs or play any special musical instrument from their respective countries. Musical instruments need to be prepared by the performers.)
◎ Performance Venue: Scenic spots on Kenting Road and the Hengchun ancient city wall ; details will be announced by the organizer
◎ Performance Date: Sept. 6 and 11, 2009; 5troupes a day. (Performance duration is subject to change based on the actual situation. Generally, each performance troupe will perform for about 60- 90 minutes.)
◎ Performance Remuneration: Remuneration will be paid based on the number of performers and their performance experience. Generally, each performance troupe will be compensated with NT$10,000 to NT$50,000 (including transportation, accommodation, tax…etc.) -
Regulations:
Songs sung or played by performers should be free from copying, counterfeiting, borrowing, or using other people’s works and are prohibited from infringing other people’s copyright. The performer(s) is/are obligated for any legal liability if he/she violates any copyright or relevant laws or regulations. -
Application:
Each performance troupe should contain one to five performers. Performers should sing or play songs focusing on their special culture, creativity and inspiration. Any pornographic performance is strictly prohibited. We encourage performers to sing or play folk songs composed by themselves or from their countries. A total of 15 troupes will be selected after evaluating their qualifications. We will announce the final results and notify the selected troupes. -
Evaluation Criteria:
a. The performance should be rich in special culture, creativity, and inspiration.
b. The evaluation will also be based on if the performance troupe or individual has much experience in performing or if they have ever received any performance award or sold any musical albums. -
Please submit your performance in either a VCD or DVD format along with your application form.
