2025 Year of Jubilee - Pilgrims of Hope

It officially began on Dec. 24, 2024 when Pope Francis opened the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica.
“Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring.”

In old times, a jubilee meant that land was returned to original owners, debts were forgiven, and slaves were set free.
The Church’s first Jubilee was in year 1300, and then held every 33 years (to honor the years of Jesus Christ) from 1389. Since 1470, ordinary Jubilees have been held every 25 years.
A Jubilee has 7 characteristics: pilgrimage, the holy door, reconciliation, prayer, liturgy, faith, and indulgences.
By participating in the Holy Year, one is granted a plenary indulgence.

Most pilgrimages can be made to Catholic churches in local or nearby dioceses.

For example, in the Kaohsiung Diocese, the translated Chinese document covers:
2025 Jubilee Parish Pilgrimage Site

  1. Kaohsiung area: Kaohsiung City Cathedral Basilica of the Holy Rosary.
  2. Pingtung Region: Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Basilica in Pingtung County. Church of the Immaculate Conception in Jiaping Village, Taiwu Township, Pingtung County.
  3. Designated date: from December 29, 2024 to January 6, 2026.
    In the Pilgrim Jubilee of Hope 2025, the faithful are invited to make devout pilgrimages to the designated places in the diocese
    If you make a pilgrimage and meet the following conditions, you will be eligible for the Jubilee Indulgence granted by the Pope:
    Participate religiously in the Holy Mass (you can attend the Jubilee Mass according to the liturgy, or attend the Mass for reconciliation, sins, etc.);
    a Mass of grace celebrated for the purpose of absolution, promoting charity, or promoting harmonious coexistence);
    A ceremonial Mass celebrating the Sacraments of Christian Initiation or the Anointing of the Sick, or any of the following Works: Liturgy of the Word; Liturgy of the Hours (readings, matins, evening prayers); Works of the Stations of the Cross; Holy Rosary; psalms dedicated to the Blessed Virgin (Akathistos); and Penitential Liturgy (Second Form) stipulates that a public confession ceremony ends with the individual confession of the penitent.

Can search your own diocese for local shrine(s) to conduct pilgrimage.

A plenary indulgence is a special gift from Christ’s Church that completely removes the temporary consequences of sins that have already been forgiven in confession. These consequences are often referred to as the temporal punishment due to sin, which is purified in purgatory. Receiving a plenary indulgence can help us or the souls in purgatory on the journey to heaven.

Of course, one does not need to be Catholic to take part in it throughout the year in some way, even if for tourism’s sake.
Many of the listed churches in Taiwan are beautiful to see the insides/interior.

All dioceses around the world are participating, and one can go to their individual websites to see what your hometown’s/region’s shrines are.

This link seems to be for the 2016 Jubilee. Chances are, these are the same for this year, but here is a more up-to-date webpage for Taipei

Translated in English:

[Jubilee 2025 - Taipei Archdiocese Version: Pilgrims of Hope]

The Catholic Jubilee, which began in the 13th century, will celebrate its 27th iteration in 2025. Initiated by Pope Francis, the 266th Pope, the Taipei Archdiocese is responding to this historic and global event through walking pilgrimages.

Everyone is invited to visit 10 pilgrimage churches in northern Taiwan to rediscover the value of tranquility, strength, and simple living. These visits aim to establish harmony with the Creator, with neighbors, and within oneself, finding peace and hope that the world cannot provide.

Although the concept of the Jubilee Year originates from the Catholic Church, the human desire to search for life’s meaning transcends religious beliefs and national boundaries.

In 2025, let us become Pilgrims of Hope together, embarking on this journey for ourselves and for those who cannot make the journey. We carry our intentions forward, meeting at the destination of hope.

Based on the Vatican’s official decree, you can visit these designated pilgrimage churches at any time during the Jubilee Year 2025, not just on the designated dates. In fact, the faithful can repeat these visits throughout the Holy Year, even daily, and acquire a plenary indulgence each time

I noticed that we are saying a different creed instead of the Nicene Creed.

I haven’t been Catholic long enough to do pilgrimage, maybe someone will show me.

A pilgrimage can be as simple as going to one of those places designated and pray inside or even attend a mass there. You can do this alone. When there you can even mention to the priest why you came or to another person there. You may meet another person on a pilgrimage by chance.

I think it’s great that the Catholic Church in Canada, the U.S. and Australia is giving all that indigenous land back to the original owners.

@Taiwan_Luthiers: been following a FB group, set up by Matthew Chiang, who is the subject of this report:

https://www.taiwan-panorama.com/en/Articles/Details?Guid=c60c0c15-f54b-4062-827d-f46194e49abf&CatId=11&postname=Our%20Very%20Own%20“Camino”-Pilgrimage%20Routes%20to%20Catholic%20Churches%20in%20Taiwan

On FB, search for “Camino Taiwan 徒步朝聖”.

You can maybe contact him for pilgrimages near where you live or read about some followers of that FB group doing their own short pilgrimage. I’ve seen signups on some postings of various trips.
