6 Heinekens for $80 (Kaohsiung)

It doesn’t seem that many Forumosans are living in Kaohsiung or are interested in what I post, but for those of you who are, here’s some info on another lounge bar deal I found.

What: 6 Heinekens for $80!!!

When: Happy Hour, from 8 to 10 pm

Where: I’ll get back to you on this. First just want to see if anyone is actually interested. But it’s near my apartment across from the 85 floor building.

Description: SMALL lounge bar, difficult to find unless you live in the area. Hong Kong Laoban, so speaks English. Haven’t actually patronized the place, but soon will. Seems ‘cozy’.

If you’re from Kaohsiung and/or interested, just post a reply and I’ll get the name and address as soon as possible.

not a very special deal for Kaohsiung and breweries often do promotional prices the end of the year. Assume it is that you buy a six pack of Heineken and then 1bottle is 80NT$

I am thinking about to go there.Do I have to pay for entrance? What about the environment?

I’ll double check the prices and get back to you. But the boss was very clear (in both English to me and Chinese to my GF) that it was $80 for 6 Heinekens. Not $80 for one. The place is really in a bad location and my guess is they don’t have much business at all. They even double as a travel agency (if that gives you some clue as to how bad the business may be). So I’d say they’re looking to do anything to get some customers to come and hopefully stay.

If it’s correct, heck, drink your six and hit the door; go to the next bar/club.

I’ll find out more tonight…

Is the place by any chance called The Shy Dog?

No, not shy dog…(are they still named that?) but that place did have a heck of a deal with the $25 draft beers sometime during the week. One of the former owners (Andy) moved on and started his own place Black Dog, where the old “Rolling Stones” bar used to be (Near Hanshin Dept. Store).

I can say Black Dog has a GREAT selection of imports. Many microbrews. Go there sometime if you haven’t.

I haven’t seen Andy in ages. I haven’t even visited his bar yet and I should go pay my respects.

Ozzo,

If it is indeed 6 bottles/cans of Heineken for 80 of these fine new Taiwan Dollars, have a good look at the expiry date as even if it is a dodgy parallel import that is really cheap. There is a lot of expired produce on the island these days. If all in good order then enjoy the fine Heinekens obviously with the owner of the plaze commiting commercial suicide!

Cheers!
Michel

Taverncaptain,
Yeah, I agree about the suicide. That works out to about 13.3 dollars per beer. Crazy. Must be a catch somewhere. She probably thought we were tourists (gf gets mistaken for not being Taiwanese sometimes) and just said some crap to get us to come back. But will check it out to be sure. Who knows, maybe she bought a ton of the stuff 3 years ago and couldn’t sell it.

I want to move to your city at the earliest possible convenience. Now that we’ve sorted out the necessities, can you please tell me how to go about making this obviously life-changing shift from Taipei? Hell for those prives I’ll even come down for a weekend!

You know, I’m really curious about this. Before I came here, people made me out to be a nut for wanting to live in the south. Since I’ve lived here, I still sometimes get odd comments about living down here. I’ve been to Taipei on a few occasions and travelled well around the island, and from what I see (pollution aside) Kaohsiung really isn’t that bad. People make it out to be like the American “Wild West” in the 1800’s. I’ll agree that the music scene here dates back about that far :stuck_out_tongue: but for the most part, I think Kaohsiung is fine.

Anyone care to refute or back that up?

Banshette, you serious about moving? If so, I wouldn’t say it would be that much of a life change, but just my guess. My advice, go to Lighthouse on the weekend and start talking to people. I’ve seen new residents go there and get all the advice they need. Can find out where all the pubs/clubs are, jobs, apartments, etc.

Was that the kind of advice you were looking for? Or something else?

If you need any more help than that, let me know.

There is no way in hell I would live in Taipei. Been in Kaohsiung since day one I have no regrets at all.

The Lighthouse is a great place, but not for conversation. Go to Norman’s Pizza on a Wednesday night if you want the pulse of Kaohsiung.

DB-
I was in & out of Taiwan, usually Taipei and Kaoshiung, for business for 10 + years before I moved here. No way I would live in Taipei.
I feel the same about Tainan. The rest of Taiwan (read-Taipei) seems to completely ignore Tainan and that is fine by people here.
I enjoy Tainan.

I went to school in Tainan. I agree…Tainan is a great city also.

Tainan and Kaoshiung have better weather, and are a lot cheaper.

Tainan is tops.

Taipei is access to different work (for me) though…

I was just wondering if there is any sort of music scene down here in Kaohsiung? I saw some pretty cool Taiwanese rock bands in central park a few months ago, but have no idea if and where they gig regularly round here (was in a rush so i couldn’t ask any of the band members). I’m REALLY craving some good rock, live and loud!

PS did that 6 beers for $80 turn out to be legit??

Sorry all, forgot to get back to this one. Seems every time I go down there to check the prices they’re…big surprise, closed. Hmmmm…early Chinese New Year? Maybe the deal was for real. Guess they could have had a large stock of Heiny’s and wanted to just get rid of them. Anyone’s guess.

We have beetle nut, beer, a garage, lot’s of friends - if your lucky you might meet Japanese, Russians disco ladies and everything else fun - or just come for some honest hanging out. No money involved. in KAOHSIUNG.
