8M ADSL Vs. 2M

Currently, we have two 2M lines at home… one for upstairs (ours) and one downstairs (sis-in-law and her boyfriend’s)

My wife is thinking to cancel our 2M line, and upgrade the downstairs line to 8M and share…

Now, the sis-in-law’s boyfriend is an avid online gamer, and if he’s not playing, he’s usually leeching etc. I, myself, also like to get online and play counterstrike occasionally, and the missus uses the net for business (quite a bit)…

I know when we were sharing a 2M line, I was getting major ping issues in CS~

Is the upgrade a good idea?

PS. Forgot to mention, we bought a new laptop the other day (waiting on delivery), so I am considering setting up a wireless connection too~ 3 computer’s sharing the connection

With 8M is plenty to share around. You can get a router that supports QoS to prioritise your gaming packets, then WWW, and finally leeching. Or you can cap the leeching to around 900k/s leaving the remaining 300k/s for other stuff. 8M max outs around 1300-1400k/s.

Oh really, I know my sling maxes out at 2200kps but thats only because I don’t give it a faster upload from my server before I download and stream. Also the sling can’t stream past 3000kps anyways.

Your claim of an 8m line maxing out at 1400 k/a is cleary wrong

Oh, my 8M maxes out at 200k …

Don’t ever think about using hinet for the 8M … you’re not going to get it … thye promise at least 2m but even that they don’t pipe to your house …

If you ask for 2 M than they ‘promise’ at least 512 k … I wonder if that’s true …

They better abolish their bullshit marketing slogan of 8M and concentrate on a 2-4 M and deliver what they promise …

False advertising is what they do …

I get 500k plus for most US sites I have to download from… the issue is also how fast their server upload is not just your download speed…

If you’re downloading in Taiwan the speeds are much higher

bp, your experience with HINET is not necessarily the same as everyone else’s. I thought you would have come to grips with that by now after ranting over and over in a few threads on the subject and having a lot of people tell you very different things about their HINET service. ADSL quality and speed depends on a lot of factors.

My 8M is routinely around 4-6M, and that’s with a router and my wife playing on-line games on a 2nd computer , so I can certainly live with that. I understand you’re not happy with your service, but that doesn’t mean it sucks for everyone.

x08, the upgrade is a good move IMO. Go for it.

They have been here, ‘checked’ stuff out and nothing happend … it’s still the same … and please don’t give me the ‘it’s a server thing’ … not when you try worldwide several servers and even the hinet servers give only 1.4 M …

God damn I live 500 m from the Chunghwa building … and their MOD blazes in like hell …

They should market their products the right way and not telling people 8M when they can’t give it, call a donky a donky and not a race horse …

The way I see it, they are marketing their product fairly. Most people are getting suitable downloads and uploads. One pissed off customer doesn’t make their advertising or marketing fraudulent. Your situation seems to be quite the anomaly.

Video streaming is KiloBITs per second, note the small “b.”

I’m talking about kiloBYTES per second.

To convert bits to bytes, divide by 8. So your video stream is actually using 2200/8=275kiloBYTES/s.

Connection speeds eg: 2M, 8M are quoted in BITS. But when you download something it’s in bytes.

If you are still unsure, download a little program called DU Meter and it’ll show you exactly how fast you are transfering up and down with option of switching the scaling between bits and bytes.

Sorry the OP never mentioned about kiloBytes or kilobits…

I’m sure that my 50mb line can do better

The slingplayer cannot due it’s internal settings. Still much better than the 300 - 350kps most other slingplayer users in Taiwan complain about

Regret any errors in my posts

I can regularly get 650KByte/s downloads on the 8Mbit Hinet line at my restaurant from major servers. But beligan pie’s experience is still instructive because not everyone can get reliable ADSL service at advertised rates.
