You didn’t mention what OS you are running, so here’s a very useful hint for Mac users, I hope it helps you.
If you’re using Safari, there’s an easy way to download YouTube videos. Open the page with the movie and press Command-Option-A, which shows the Activity window. If you’re also loading other sites, you’ll see a list of them: scroll until you find the YouTube page and click on the arrow to show details about what is being loaded.

You will certainly notice an element whose size is over 0.5MB (most of the time, over 5MB). Double-click on it (even if it is still loading), and Safari will download it. When the download is over, navigate to the file in the Finder (which will probably be called get_video) and add the extension .flv to its name. Now you can play it with VLC or with QuickTime (only if you have Perian installed).
Mac…i’m not THAT geeky yet!

good old XP home ed,that’s all, with FF browser

I’m using Orbit Downloader (with flashgot) as a download manager on Firefox 3, that claims to be able to download youtube videos, I’ve never tried it.
A google for “youtube dowloader” give loads of results, I don’t know how of those are safe.

Some websites will do it for you too, like downloader9.com/ , that might be the simplest way. Again, I have no experience of these.

But don’t abuse it, one reason why sites like youtube can show what they do is because it is streamed and more easily controlled and can show you adverts while you watch. If millions of people start abusing it and download copyrighted material, they will just tighten the controls and we wont be able to watch them at all.

Firefox Add-on: Video DownloadHelper 3.2

A simple “No, but thank you anyway” would have been enough.
