Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and count how many things are running under Processes. Actually…you don’t need to count it says the number in the bottom left corner of that window.
I have 30. With only msn, and flashget (visibly) running.

I suspect that is not a good thing. I just rebooted about 30 minutes ago because it was so bloody slow.

If you don’t already have it…get this: lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
And then try again and see how many.
Everyone should run Ad-aware once a week. It only takes about 1 min to do it’s scanning.
49 with 2 -5 % CPU usage.
76 processes, no noticeable CPU load.
Then again, I use “ps agux | wc” to check my process count, not some silly thing starting with hitting a bunch of keys all together.

102, did I win anything?

No.
andre@suse10:~> ps aux | wc

And I only have Firefox and a file browser running. ![]()
Weird, I thought I had too many with only 30. You guys need to clean up your comps. The computer at my work has like 10 running on it…that’s what got me worried in the first place.
No.

Damn it, I am beaten. And I even had one or two other apps open.

You can just right-click on the bottom taskbar if you have Windows. You don’t need to ctrl-alt-del…just go to task manager. I guess a lot of people have a whole bunch of stuff that they don’t need and that just start up when they turn on the computer. I usually just run msconfig, and clean up the start-up thingie. Now I’ve got 23 processes running.
That said, I think I’ve got a bunch of weird stuff floating around here too.
Nothing as bad as my one friend who after 2 years on her puter phoned me saying that she was running out of space and the thing was bloody slow. I told her to try things like disk clean-up and defragment first. She phoned back saying that this thing called the recycle bin was taking up a whole bunch of space, and they said she could delete that along with her temporary internet files. She had never discovered the recycle bin! I kid you not. She also had about a million unnecessary processes running. Poor baby puter.
Anything over 50 is pretty scary. Sucking the power of the CPU.
