A Republican admits Iraq War was a mistake

Breaking ranks with the White House and his Republican leaders in Congress, Rep. Doug Bereuter of Nebraska has said in a letter to constituents the U.S. military action in Iraq was a mistake.

“I’ve reached the conclusion, retrospectively, now that the inadequate intelligence and faulty conclusions are being revealed, that all things being considered, it was a mistake to launch that military action especially without a broad and engaged international coalition,”

“Now we are immersed in a dangerous, costly mess and there is no easy and quick way to end our responsibilities in Iraq without creating bigger future problems in the region and, in general, in the Muslim world.”

Is this signs of the Neo-Con losing control of the GOP?

"Bereuter was particularly critical of the pre-war intelligence, which described an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. But no such weapons have been found since the U.S.-led invasion.

Bereuter voted in support of an October 2002 resolution authorizing the use of force in Iraq, but he said that vote was based on what he had been told about the WMD threat from Iraq.

“Left unresolved for now is whether intelligence was intentionally misconstrued to justify military action,” Bereuter said."

"More than a month after the transfer of political power from the U.S.-led occupation to an interim Iraqi government, the poll found that just over half of American voters surveyed (52 percent) disapprove of the president’s management of Iraq policy. And almost six out of 10 adults (58 percent) said the Bush administration does not have a “clear plan” for bringing Iraq to a “successful conclusion.”

“Dissatisfaction with Iraq is shaping opinions about foreign policy as much, if not more than, Americans’ continuing concerns over terrorism,” said the survey analysis. “Continuing discontent with the way things are going in Iraq underlies public criticism of the Bush administration’s overall approach to national security.”

The survey also found a “sharp increase” in the number of Americans who have doubts about whether the Iraq campaign has helped curtail the war on terrorism. Only 45 percent say it has helped, down from 62 percent in February."

War is so popular that PM Blair can’t run away fast enough from Bush. Blair won’t even take the Congressional Medal of Honor from Bush :unamused:

It takes a big man to admit when he’s wrong.

All it takes is a mule to stubbornly stick to the same obstinate opinion.

Be a man, not a beast of burden.

Of course that’s just one Republican down and a whole bunch more to go. The problem with the Bush administration is that they don’t admit mistakes and, after things have gone wrong, they don’t have any accountability. These guys behave as responsibly as crack whores.

It would be a nightmare to be stuck on the Bush-Cheney campaign tour bus – a bunch of unprepared losers who can’t admit when they’ve taken the wrong turn and haven’t even bothered to bring a roadmap.
