A whine about wine

The South Africans have a way with wine, it’s a very classical gem this one, and as I prefer hogging it all for myself, I won’t mention the name of either the wine, or the obscure supermarket chain (Chinese-only-name, don’t even know what it is) that’s vending it… Anyway, it was regularly priced at about 400 something, but every now and then they’d throw a sale on for about 385… I bought six or eight bottles once at the same time.

(Hey, is there a thread for posting poetry, I woke up this morning with the window on my soul flung open, and weirdly vivid stuff started jumping onto the paper… It can’t happen tomorrow… Ahhh…)

That’s the kindred spirit, mate…

Popo, does the wine taste better when you know you 're not sharing it with anyone else?

It just gives me another reason for drinking that beaut Aussie wine… aaaah, Shiraz.

The Big (and slightly pissed-off) Babou :?

Sorry Babou, I’ll find out the name later, it escapes me just now… Wait a day or two…

oink

Hey,

Cheers for that. Popo.

The Big Babou

I’m amazed to see so many replies to my little grumble. Perhaps we should start a whiners club?

Babou: the name of the wine is Laborie, and it is a Cabarnet Sauvignon from South Africa, vintage 1993, and it costs about 488 to 500 something… But worth it…

Well, to be honest you can drink red wine at any temperature that suits you.

As for storing, 4c is a little on the cold side but not by much, its probably the low point of acceptable temperatures. The main thing is not to let the temperature change too much.

Some red wines are served cool - some of the Beaujolais stuff for example. Its normally reserved for light grape varieties with little oomph. merlot fits into this style. But, yeah, not something I would do.

Two things:
A guy who really does know his wine runs a steak restaurant at 147 Hangzhou S. Road (Star Wine and Dine). But you will have to pay up for very fine burgundy and a smattering of US/Oz wines.

There used to be a superb wine shop specialising mostly in Aussie stuff, next to Georg Jensen on Ren Ai Road, run by a wine enthusiast. But she moved shop maybe 18 months ago… and I have not been able to find her. For a NT$1500 or so, you could get some super premium Aussie shiraz (St Hallet, Charles Melton) and , yes, even some merlot (James Irvine). I fear she may have gone out of business because the local wine snobs believe that only french wine will do… how misguided.
