Gentle peat on the nose and taste. Sweetness but not too much. About perfect in this respect. Oil just coats your mouth when tasting. Salty. Some fruit flavors that I’m unable to distinguish. This is one that definitely needs to be tried.

I’ve been eyeing this one for some time. The problem in Taiwan is that it’s often too warm for peated whisky.

I think if anyone had it they would! This place had a pretty good selection when I looked, worth a call. There seems to be more of a variety of bourbon around these days.

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban. 46%. Non-chill filtered. 12 year old (the original 10, with an additional 2 in port pipes). Colored? I’m not sure… nothing mentioned on the box… I get the feeling all the exceptionally dark and beautiful red and orange comes from the ruby port pipes (they are large… probably around 650 liters, but have similar proportions to a standard barrel, so lots of surface area for color and flavor exchange.) Complex, mouth-filling, thick and chewable. One of those intriguing whiskies that really invites you to keep trying to put your finger on its multiple facets. Pop the cork open and you get a lovely whiff of… surprise, surprise… whisky, port, and I even got a tiny hint of vinegar… in a good way). Lovely thick syrupy legs down the glass and the color is extremely rich and attractive. First sniff and I was a bit worried as I received an olfactory punch from the alcohol (it’s 46% after all), but fortunately it was just my nose acclimatizing to the wonderful environment in the glass, and after a moment, the fruitiness and sweetness revealed themselves. Numerous sips and lots of enjoyable mouth swilling later, there was raisiny sugar, orange peel and very dark chocolate, a creaminess, a spiciness, and of course the malt and oak. The marketing tasting notes mention mint, which is rather unusual… took me a while to get that, but it’s definitely there very slightly in the finish, which is long and keeps you chewing more… even a tiny bit of smoke, not peat, but char from the cask.
This 12 year old (which itself replaced the original port wood finish about 10 years ago), while still available, has been replaced by the 14 year old. I’ve yet to try the 14 year old (it’s on my to do list), but have seen mixed reviews, and some people still seem to prefer the 12. It’s such an excellent whisky I’m thinking of picking up a case before it disappears. Can get it on sale now, too.
As for the name “Quinta Ruban” – the “Quinta” is in reference to the Portuguese wine estates where they source the port pipes, and “Ruban” is Gaelic for ruby.
