Absolute Beginner: Hostel Advice Request

Hello All - Welcome to my first post.

Can anyone recommend a good hostel as a starting point for a week or two when first arriving in Taiwan? I’m an absolute noob!

I’m sure this question has been asked innumerable times before here. A quick search yielded some older results and was a great starting point but I’d like to to see if you all have some specific recommendations based on your own experiences.

I’ve spent the last two months traveling around SE Asia with the intent of arriving in Taipei in mid-August to search for an English teaching position (not too late I hope!). I hope to be flying out of Bangkok in the next week or so.

Almost more important than the accommodations is the atmosphere of the hostel. I’d love to find a place where I could make some good contacts and get a little transitional job search advice. Is there a hostel where longtimers tend to stay?

Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

BTW - I don’t have a cell phone. Would it be cheaper for me to buy one here in Thailand before I leave or better to wait until I am in Taiwan?

I’ve been to Taipei Hostel and Formosa Hostel (1 and 2). I prefer Formosa.

Taipei Hostel has a good website: http://www.taipeihostel.com/index.html

They are both quite ugly but reasonably clean IMO.

Here are some more addresses:

A cheap Nokia phone can be had for NT$2300. Compare that price to whatever they go for in Thailand.

PM me to talk about getting it hooked up, or have a rummage around in the technology forum.

Welcome, btw.

Just don’t stay too long at one of those. Always the paranoia of someone steeling something even though that might not happen. But you meet “some” intersting people. The ones that are not so insecure about why they are staying in a hostel that are woriking on five page lesson plans for the following day.

By the way,

What are some hostels where beginners DON’T tend to stay. I don’t care about making contacts or getting job-search advice. I’d rather talk to international travelers and practice my Russian and Japanese, if possible.

Thanks for the advice. So I get the impression that the hostels aren’t such a great idea overall. Get in, get out. Never stayed in one before… seems like it will be a bit of an experience.

i’ve had a great experience at the “Guest House Taiwanmex”. perfect location, very clean, excellent management, cheap rates.

i’ve been here for about 2 weeks and don’t have any complaints. plan on staying another month.
