Yup. I preferred Sinners to One Battle After Another, but they’re both great films.
I don’t know about best picture but One Battle would have been a shoe-in for best cartoon. Or best screenplay generated entirely by AI.
Thank god Sinners didn’t win best picture or best director. The hype was ridiculous.
The hype was bonkers, starting with a record 16 nominations.
Hollywood has reworked movies many times in the past (A Star is Born, Mutiny on the Bounty, etc., known as remakes) and three remakes have won Best Picture (The Sound of Music, Ben-Hur, The Departed), but Sinners felt more like a sampling of From Dusk till Dawn than a remake.
Which is fine, but Best Picture?!
Yeah, it was OK to watch as a genre flick, but definitely not Oscar material.
Soundtrack was good.
Penn had an urgent engagement in Ukraine and had to skip the clown show:

He didn’t show for his first two wins,either.
Like I said, when I first saw Sinners I thought it was the first episode of a 20s set black version of Supernatural, about a kid, his dog, and his guitar roaming around the south to hunt monsters,and kept on looking for the next episode. I figured there would be a great song opening and closing each one
Penn’s win for “One Battle After Another” was his first Oscar in the best supporting actor category. He had previously won best actor for his performances in “Mystic River” and “Milk.” He attended both of those Oscar ceremonies.
Oops! Yes, he accepted both times he won previously, but has made his disdain for the Awards clear.
I wouldn’t have shown my face in public either if I’d turned in the clownish performance he did in One Custody Battle After Another. He probably didn’t realize what a fool he was making of himself until he saw the finished product.
One Battle was not special. Just an OK chase thriller with added wokeness about riots and illegals to gather favor with the jury votes
I suspect Penn’s Lockjaw didn’t require much real effort in that, outside personal convictions, Penn may be that guy irl.
I reckon Penn’s ego is even bigger than Trump’s, if that’s possible. What a gas bag, although I’m sure politically aware young people are likely to see his trip to Ukraine as prime virtue signaling.
I noticed that di Caprio was there and mostly wore a look of bemusement during the ceremony. Penn could have been an adult irl, too. I have to think the other nominees for OBAA, as well as the little people who worked behind the scenes on the movie, were happy to see the support.
I know you’re disappointed that “Melania” didn’t win. Maybe next year it’ll be the Trump biopic’s turn.
