My two cents: the world would be a better place if people thought not just about whatās legal, but whatās fair and ethical.
Irrespective of legality in any particular location, a big problem with Airbnb is the impact it has on neighbors. If you have them, you should consider how your Airbnb could affect their quality of life. When they bought their place, did they expect to be living next to a short-term rental/hotel?
I appreciate all comments at this point. Iām 1-5 years away from moving forward with this, if I do actually start this at all.
One option I have been considering is buying land in the countryside and building a small annex type of residence separate from the main house.
As for a regular residence, one other way to minimize impact on neighbors is to get a place that is the only unit on a floor and with no elevator in the building. This is actually not that uncommon with some old buildings in Hualien City. I know because we went apartment shopping a couple of years of ago.
In addition to the ethical reasons you mentioned, itās bad for business to be upsetting neighbors!
Oh and another consideration of mine is to get a place that is one or two bedrooms with double beds in each. Either way something set up for one or two families and priced a bit higher as a result. Basically, I would like to avoid getting a place ready to be used as a sex motel. Talk about pissing off neighbors!
Just had a crap experience. First and last time iāll be using it in Taiwan. Too much chabuduoism going on here to risk such a thing.
They owned the whole building, so it was basically a hotel with no reception and dodgy customer service anyway.
Firstly, the bloody bed collapsed, and no, no sex on it yet, it collapsed under the sheer force of being layed on only. Next problem was the doors had such a large gap between the door and the frame that we could hear everything next door, it was 2 guys and a girl, they came back at 3 am and I was praying they wouldnāt have a threesome. luckily they didnāt. The customer service was the worst part though, they gave me $500ntd refund and told me to bugger off.
The price was around $5500 ntd so not cheap at all.
The gf posted the story on a popular facebook page, a bunch of media outlets contacted us. after that the owner wanted to talk with us, and gave a full refund. Funny that, they told me to do one before and said it was impossible to pay us back more than $500ntd.
