Hello.
I’m teaching my international students here in Taipei about the Age of Reform in US History. I was wondering if anyone knew of any suitable Taiwanese civil rights events lately (english news only!) with any of the following subjects: penal reform, mental institutions, women’s rights, slavery, or educational reform.
I’m sure there’s lots… but if anyone has any newspaper articles or video clips that are particularly outstanding or inspirational to link to, I’d be very happy to set my students off to write a letter in protest or something.

There were two interesting Letters to the Editor in the TAIPEI TIMES on Nov. 4, 2011.

The first discusses why there is no “thorough treatment” of local political and election issues in the English language press in Taiwan, but rather a lot of coverage of events in China. It is titled “Politics without policies.”
The second discusses the dismal state of education in the junior high and high schools here. It is titled “Education without learning.”

From a few years ago but highly entertaining read…A Canadian English-teaching jackass wanted to protest against police inaction on slavery (maid), women’s rights issues. Ended up being slapped by a politician and crying.
