šŸ›¬ šŸ›« Airport | Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA)

You can see from this link that originally SungShan was planned to close when Terminal 1 at Taoyuan converts to domestic use, while Taoyuan builds a third international terminal. This of course was also based on the MRT type express reaching Taoyuan. I dont really know why it took so long to get the MRT type express out to Taoyuan but it did take so long for plans to change. We dont see a Terminal 3 being done at Taoyuan yet, instead Terminal 1 is undergoing an extensive revamp.

But Terminal 3 is being planned. And also plans for a third runway.

When the 3rd terminal is built and the 3rd runway in place and the fast link to the Taoyuan airport is also opened , all within the next ten years. Then Sungshan could stand a good chance to be closed. And the much needed land redeveloped.

I agree in principle that Sungshan should close. And it is an awesome, nay stupendous opportunity to ā€œproperlyā€ develop Taipei. A new dawn for Taiwans capital city. A chance to be a truly modern international city patterned after the HsinYi district area near Taipei 101. IF its all done ā€œrightā€ .

According to this list Taipei was not on the top end of the worlds busiest airports (2006)

So technically I do think its possible for SungShan to close and Taoyuan take over .
Looking less and less like SungShan is ā€œneededā€

If Songshan closes we’ll miss watching the planes come in / land / take off, which is pretty cool, especially from Binjiang street, lane 180!

Yes that has got to be one of the best places in the world to view aircraft in action!!!

Well, Haneda is still 30 minutes by train from downtown, so it’s about the same distance as Taoyuan…

Once we all flydrive in the future, an airport close by could come in handy. We could fly from Songshan to Taoyuan…

Ah yes, the irony isn’t lost on me. Kind of like the beachgoers at Kenting who have to swim among the turds they flushed down the toilet earlier in the day. Very Taiwan.

If it’s business as usual, the banks will buy it all up and nothing will ever get built.

Songshan Airport is awesome.

Haters can continue to drive to Taoyuan, then fly to HK and then fly to China if they don’t like it. Make a statement.

I on the other hand will mosey on down Dunhua and board my direct flight thank you very much.

Sungshan expecting up to 13,000 passengers all using Terminal 1, while Terminal 2 undergoes revamp. Nice to see SungShan busy again. Iv always liked that airport. Lots of nice memories there.

I flew in/out domestically from Songshan 2 weeks ago and liked it. Quick and easy, and once terminal 2 is finished, it should be even better. It’s probably just as close for me to get to Taoyuan airport as I live in Danshui, but no complaints about Songshan at all.

I have now scrolled through more than twenty years of posts in the Taiwan Travel subforum, and I cannot find a simple dedicated Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA) thread—hence my decision to start one here. @hannes if you wish to merge or reorganize, please kindly do so.

I am starting this thread with a PSA: the Han Kuang military drills this summer will reportedly involve airport defence drills. This will apparently affect Songshan Airport on July 23 this year. If you’re flying out of or into TSA that day, there may be delays, especially in the 10:00 am - 11:00 am window.

TPE (Taoyuan International Airport) will also be affected, reportedly on July 25, as posted in the dedicated thread for that airport.

Some available direct destinations from TSA. Three international countries, Haneda in Tokyo, Gimpo in Seoul, and a few places in China. Nothing in SEA.

It has a real weird upstairs food court with a severe staff shortage. I recommend the Hsin Dong Yang in the ground floor right in the middle. All Cantonese ē‡’č‡˜ at decent prices.

I think the upstairs (i.e. boarding) area before security at TSA is lovely: open space, chilled out, with a friendly Starbucks store there too.

I could see that the latter would not be a plus for folks from down under.

Guy

Not the boarding area. Food court at the far end.

Out of that helpful list (thank you for posting it), it’s fascinating to me that the full cost Korean carriers (Korean Air and, for now, Asiana) don’t even bother with the Gimpo - Songshan route, leaving it instead to two low cost carriers. Given the number of Koreans visiting Taipei, this seems odd, especially given the way that the Japanese full cost carriers (ANA and Japan Airlines) are all-in on the Haneda - Songshan route.

It takes about 20 steps to get from one to the other of those places. :joy:

I still like it up there, but yes I agree not for eating.

Flew to Shanghai for a meeting this week out of TSA. I agree it’s nice and chill upstairs, but definitely eat before you go through security.

It’s 2 mins up the road from our place, so will always try to fly from there if I can.

I tried to eat there once but each place only had one person working so they would take an order and then disappear into the kitchen.

Ahh the joys of a labour shortage!

Now I remember what I’ve done when I’ve caught a flight out of TSA: I stopped in at the Robuchon outpost in the basement of Fuxing Sogo and picked up a tasty sandwich or two before continuing up on the Brown Line to the Songshan Airport stop. Tasty and affordable and fast—although of course not helpful for anyone catching a morning flight.
