I for the moment have two 3G plans and they are not equal in speed. I don’t know of any kind of speed test… (I bet there is one some where) for 3G, but using Google Local (the map program) on Zhonghua is way faster than using it on Taiwanmobile.
Just thought I’d point that out to anyone thinking about getting 3G for data. Now this might be because the Zhonghua plan is a Data plan (unlimited internet) and the TaiwanMobile plan is (soon to be was) a 3G plan added to a regular account.

That is all.
I can only imagine that the reason for faster internet through Zhonghua is because all internet lines eventually connect through Zhonghua. Everyone still rents the Zhonghua lines don’t they?
Well Chunghwa owns the physical lines so anything going over them will have been leased to TM. Depending on the deal… Chunghwa could be hosting all of TM’s gear and just leasing as a service. If that’s the case they could be saving the good bandwidth for themselves. There’s no way TM is going around installing 3G boxes on the street.
Hey. I was just thinking about 3g today and came here looking for you MTK. What’s the service like? Can you get 3g outside the city?
What sort of plans are out there? I’m curious what you pay and waht you get.
I think the two companies that have the best deals (for 3G) are Zhonghua and FarEasTone. Zhonghua is 850 for unlimited 3G data. I’m not sure about FET.
Everywhere you have cell coverage (3G cell that is.) Which is all of Taipei City and beyond… (how far beyond is the question.) Coverage for 3G should be much better now than it was when it first came out though.
The reason I ask is because I have a crap internet connection in my house but my cell comes in loud and clear. Maybe I should consider ditching my ADSL and using my phone’s 3G and pump it, via USB (or bluetooth… yeah), to my home setup or notebook.
I’ve just now started to learn about 3G. On my journey last night I bumped into these devices that convert 3G signal into an 802.11 wireless signal… cool, ya?
Really? I haven’t been able to find out anything on their website. Can you point me in the right direction? TIA
Feiren, MTK,
It’s a corporate invitation. Meeting their rep this Friday to discuss about their offerings. Introduction from an inside connection (isn’t it always ).
The initial specs sent to me, they’re offering two handsets: 8700g (~NT$13,000-NT$14,000) and 7290 (~NT$8000-NT$8500).
Ok, got some more details from the TWM reps. The voice rates are based on existing TWM plans so if you’re a TWM customer, you’re probably familiar with them.
3G is not available now but they expect to offer that capability by 3Q 2007. Now the one information you guys are all waiting for, when will this service be offered to non-corporate customers…
Real Soon.
Translated to mean as early as end of this year… to your guess is as good as mine. I’m guessing by CNY or thereabouts they’ll be offering it to individuals and TWM customers.
An interesting note on their 8700g handsets, it’s slightly different from the Hong Kong CSL ones. I’m baffled as to why it’d be so, but they are - keyboard/buttons. Personally, I dislike the 8700g keyboard, much prefer the older 7290 (or older) keyboard. I’ve fat fingers. OTOH, the 8700g GUI is much nicer so it’s a wash.
I bought a 3g handset this weekend. Now all I have to do it try to understand how to use it.
So from what I understand is that, when I go buy the service, they will actually give me a different SIN card to slide into my phone. Then all calls and data will be sent through the 3g network. I guess I’d figured that I’d be using only for data.
www.fetnet.net has an english site but I couldn’t find ANYTHING involving 3g.
I’m going to try to get onto some other carriers’ sites and see if I can see all their services. That should help me understand what I’ll be paying.
