If you say a lie often enough, it becomes the truth, unfortunately. Especially in countries like Taiwan where the KMT still has pretty firm control over the media and the schools. And the few improvements seen since 1990 seem likely to be eroded even more now, as Chinese (proxy or open) media outlets get a greater share.
Well let’s see. We have the word of Wu Den-yih against the word of Forumosa. Since I came to Taiwan in 2006 people have been talking about the KMT’s illegal assets, but like most issues here there’s little in-depth discussion past the headline. I’d like to know what these assets are that make the KMT supposedly the world’s “richest political party” (thanks, Taipei Times) that could possibly rocket it to more wealth than the Republican Party or the Communist Party of China (Hah!).
The KMT own banks, movie studios, vast real estate holdings, media companies, and many more. They came to Taiwan in 1949 broke. Dead broke.
Now where exactly did this broke party get the funding to buy up so many companies? Don’t forget even state-owned enterprises under the Japanese belonged to the Taiwanes people, not the KMT. So anything they expropriated for the party, including land, was obtained illegally. It would be like the Republicans claiming ownership of AMTRAK, or the National Parks.
Now this is the first time I have read that the KMT was dead broke in 1949. Do you have reputable sources to back up this claim as I would like to read about this in detail.

I don’t see how the KMT could have taken all the state assets of China in 1945 and then come to Taiwan dead broke. My understanding is they left China plundered by bringing all the riches here and leaving the peasants on the mainland to fend for themselves. Regardless, I’d still like to see some proof that the KMT has more money than the CPC.
The KMT did not plunder China in 1945. Most assets post WWII were going the other way, from Taiwan to China.
In any case, in 1949, they came with gold reserves which came to about 2 years of government revenue. Taiwan’s economy was in shambles, hyper-inflation had hit in 1948, deficits were 31% of revenue, and if the island was not to fall to the communists a 600,000 man army had to be maintained. So yeah, broke, with very few prospects for success until US Aid kicked in. Having the resources to muddle through for a little while longer before an inevitable collapse is reasonably synonymous with being broke.
During the 1950s, 90% of central government revenue went to the military. How long could that have been maintained? Well, according to US government assessments in 1965, when Aid was cut off, not likely for very long.

How does the CPC have money? There are plenty of state-owned enterprises in China but this is more again to the BBC is the UK for example. They are owned by the state not the party though it’s obviously murky.
The KMT through its investment agencies, and profits from companies it owns (and not the ROC) is very wealthy. These businesses should be state-owned but they are party owned.
As the quote above shows, even the gold brought over from China is considered party assets. That is not right.
And don’t think that small countries can’t have exceptionally rich parties or people. Dangote, a Nigerian, is one of the 25th wealthiest people in the world.

The assets also exist in the form of holding companies, eg. 中央投資公司 aka 中投, and many others.

The KMT sold its media to friendly friends such as Wang Wang 蔡衍明 and 趙少康 in exchange of cash. This is just move assets from one category to another.
The KMT considers themselves to be the sole power in Taiwan, and can’t see that there is any distinction between national assets and party assets. The party IS the country, so therefore the fact that the KMT stole all the country’s corporations, land, and wealth is not at all some kind of illegal action, it’s theirs anyway.
And look at the flag and the national anthem: both additional examples of the lack of distinction between the state and the party. Hitler’s Nazis were very similar: the state flag was the party flag, etc. I think it’s a common enough attitude from fascists the world over.
And what is the problem? It’s that the KMT obtained all the holdings with problematic assets!

According to this consultant/lawyer of Ma Yingjiu’s father, Ma Yingjiu and 13 other top KMT leaders are stashing KMT assets into their own pockets. Maybe that’s why Wu declares there’s no unclean assets left, the unclean assets are in their own bank accounts.
The former consultant, Wang Ke-fu, is revealing this information to the district attorney because Ma Yingjiu refused to meet with on over the issues of party assets and veteran support. Wang said he has been a KMT member for 56 years. There were close to 200 billion NTD worth of party assets back in the year 2000, and by 2006 only 27 billion was left, and the rest vanished without a trace. Wang believes many party assets were taken from the people and should be returned to the people.
Hey, if Chen Shui-bian can keep some of his ill gotten gains, why can’t the KMT? The KMT has sold most of the land they held, haven’t they?
