Alleged Terrorist Moves to Canada
Arar has relocated to my hometown and the moonbat Canadian liberals in town including the university people and newspapermen are rolling out the red carpet for him and his wife. :unamused: :unamused:

After more than a year of imprisonment and torture in a Syrian military prison, followed by a three-year legal struggle back in Ottawa to clear his name of allegations he was an al-Qaeda terrorist, Mr. Arar, 35, is building a new life for himself and his family here under the sunny skies of the British Columbia Interior in a community that is opening its heart to them. “I’m prepared for the idea that the terrorist label might stick and I may have to live with it all my life. But it will be important for my kids, at a certain point, as they grow up, to know their father is not a terrorist,” he said.

He’s hoping that a federal judicial commission of inquiry into his case will clear his name when it issues its report in Ottawa on Monday.

Many of Mr. Arar’s new neighbours in Kamloops are asking themselves these same questions, says Denis Walsh, a local political activist who also owns a video store that specializes in political films and foreign documentaries.

“We really hope this report next week gives him some closure,” Mr. Walsh said. “We have a lot of respect for him and what his family has gone through.”

Mr. Walsh said there is a strong group of progressive political activists in town who see the Arar family as something like celebrities.

To set the stage for the Arar commission report next week, Mr. Walsh and sponsors from the Kamloops chapter of Amnesty International arranged a screening Sunday night of British director Michael Winterbottom’s The Road to Guantanamo, a film that chronicles the mistreatment and torture of three British Muslim prisoners at the U.S. Marine camp.“We were going to invite Maher and Monia but we didn’t want to make them feel obliged to do something they were uncomfortable with,” Mr. Walsh said.

“They’re just settling in.” The family relocated here after Dr. Mazigh’s — she has a PhD in finance and commerce — accepted a teaching job at Thompson Rivers University.

The Kamloops Daily News broke the story Aug. 31 on its front page. In an accompanying column, Daily News editor Mel Rothenburger, the former mayor, wrote glowingly about the grace under pressure Mr. Arar and Dr. Mazigh had demonstrated throughout their ordeal. “It’s an honour,” the editor wrote, “to have this courageous family among us.”

Mr. Arar said Dr. Mazigh’s hijab draws almost no stares on the streets, which was not the case in Ottawa.

He predicted that as more Muslims move to Kamloops, the community will develop the critical mass necessary to open a mosque and hire an imam.

Until then, he’ll spend more time instructing the children in Arabic and introducing them to readings in the Koran.

Baraa has started to wear a hijab to school. It’s no big deal at a school where teachers give instruction on multiculturalism as an icebreaker for the new pupils at the start of the school year.

And so the subversion starts…

But it’s very progressive…

Another slam dunk, no doubt, but nothing that will apparently hold up in court.

Have you guys, at long last, no shame?
There are new claims about Syrian-born Canadian Maher Arar and his alleged ties to terror.

The National Post quotes intelligence sources from Canada and the U.S. who claim to be “100 per cent sure” Arar trained with al Qaeda in Afghanistan.

The report quotes unnamed, high-level Canadian and American officials who claim to have had access to an extensive secret intelligence file on Arar.
That was 3 years ago…seems they were wrong… another man persecuted because of his origin and faith…and because he was in the US in September 2001…

He was tortured in Syria…a Canadian sent to Syria!..an innocent Canadian sent to Syria and Tortured…Mustafashagga, Shin-Gua, Doctor Evil…where’s your outrage for these crimes?

Thread Title: Alleged Terrorist Moves to Canada

I don’t quite understand the title of this thread, because it seems to suggest that this “alleged terrorist” recently moved to Canada, when in fact, the person in question is already a Canadian citizen.

Here’s news today on Maher Arar.
Published: Monday, September 18, 2006

OTTAWA — False information given to American authorities by an inexperienced RCMP anti-terrorism team, which tagged Maher Arar as an “Islamic extremist,” very likely set off a chain of events that led to his deportation and torture in Syria, an inquiry has found.

An exhaustive report also unequivocally cleared Arar, a Syrian-Canadian, of any links to terrorism and suggested that federal compensation is in order for his one-year ordeal in a Syrian jail.
Please, give the fear-mongering a rest.

He should sue the USA government.

Shin-Gua, Doctor Evil…any comments…is the Canadian investigation enough for you to stop vilifying at least this Muslim?
Any retraction forthcoming?..I suspect not…Your bigoted world view presumes people of Muslim faith to be guilty even when proven innocent……

For Sale: hand-crank operated “talking points” generator from the Neocon era. Perfect condition. Best offer.

Some sample output:

“Just because there’s no proof he’s guilty doesn’t prove he’s innocent.”

“Torture first and ask questions later.”

“You’re either with us or against us.”

“Islamofascist appeaser!”

Perfect for entertaining at parties, for PhD thesis or other historical research or for just plain fun. Not sold to minors or religious fanatics.

I once ate a falafel.

Sorry, but I was living in Indonesia when 911 occured…some progressive Muslims smashed me in the head with a rock while a British engineer who was vsiting was stabbed in the chest. I guess I’ll just have to consider you another clueless moron until proven otherwise.

Ah… so that’s what happened.

What about that guy tells you that he was progressive?

Was it the size and shape of his rock?
The manner in which he clouted you?
His choice of target?

Ah… so that’s what happened.
Along with my apartment in Bali being so heavily damaged by the 2002 bombing it had to be pulled down.
What about that guy tells you that he was progressive?

Uh…I didn’t say, one Muslim, did I? :unamused: And…all Muslims are progressive, didn’t you get the fax?

I see.

  1. Some few persons smashed you in the head with a rock.
(Sorry, but actually, now that sounds funny… something like the stoning scene in Life of Brian. Sure it didn’t feel too funny at the time.)
  2. Your apartment was damaged… inadvertently, I assume, as you, personally, weren’t the target?
So now, all Muslims are bad?
    That makes sense.
    Bad precident though, isn’t it?

I mean, imagine if you were a Canadian, in the army, in Afghanistan, and not once, but twice, some airforce jock bombed or strafed your buddies. Would you suddenly turn your sights on ‘progressive’ G.I.s?
(Or an Italian in Cavalese, or a German driving past an army base, or a Japanese living in Okinawa…)

Ever been bitten by a dog? They’re ALL bad too.

While understandable, fear and angry aren’t exactly condusive to clear thinking.
Nonetheless, completely understandable. Once bitten…

Not a pleasant experience…were you sharing your bigoted views with them at the time?

Strange I’ve had a Buddhist put a gun in my face and have had Catholics hold me up at knife point……been called a terrorist by people of the Jewish faith for asking why?..and I don’t hate Buddhists, Catholics or Jews……Dr Evil I suspect you prefer hating to thinking it’s easier……

By the way you should give a fuck… total world Muslim Population in 2006 is 1.6 billion…and growing fast…

By the way, Dr Evil, you have yet to comment on the Arar Commission findings…

Back on topic, more headlines:
OTTAWA—Justice Dennis O’Connor’s report on Maher Arar is a study in what can — and in Arar’s case did — go wrong when terrorist-spooked governments go overboard on security.

To read the three-volume report on the arrest, imprisonment and torture of the Canadian computer engineer is to weep. Except for Arar himself, who O’Connor describes as dignified, courageous — and innocent — virtually everyone involved in this sad affair comes away morally diminished.

The RCMP bears the brunt of O’Connor’s careful and judicious criticism. Indeed, the question left in regard to the Mounties’ handling of this case is whether they were malevolent or simply incompetent.
Sing the headlines once more, with feeling, Mr. Alledged-Terrorist-Moving-to-My-Hometown:
Ottawa - A formal Canadian protest to Washington appeared to be planned on Tuesday as the result of an official inquiry into the U.S. deportation in 2002 of a Canadian citizen to Syria, where he was subsequently tortured.

The government said it agreed with the 23 recommendations by Justice Dennis O'Connor, who headed the inquiry and concluded that Maher Arar was tortured in Syria, the country of his birth, after being arrested in New York on suspicion of involvement with al Qaeda.

“Mr. Arar has been done a tremendous injustice,” Prime Minister Stephen Harper told the House of Commons. “The government has received this report that has a series of recommendations… The government will act swiftly based on those recommendations.”

Most of the recommendations focus on errors made by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which wrongly told U.S. authorities that Arar was an Islamic extremist.

But one recommendation was to "register a formal objection with the governments of the United States and Syria concerning their treatment of Mr. Arar and Canadian officials involved with his case."

The report also advocated compensating Arar.

"We think those are good and sound recommendations," Public Security Minister Stockwell Day said of the entire package.

"We don't see a problem with any of those recommendations. We think it's good advice from Justice O'Connor, and we intend to act on those," he told reporters.
Yes, let’s have that formal protest from the Canadian government. Arar was a citizen of which nation? Canada of the US? And who was the source of the information that the US used to deport Arar to Syria? Canada or the US? and given that the Canadian government did not want Arar, what was the US supposed to do: grant him asylum? He was returned to the Syrian government by the US with the same information from Canada’s government that was given to the US. What the Syrian government chose to do or not do with him was its decision. IF the Canadian government had demanded protection for its citizen, do you think that the US government would have deported him to Syria?

Jaboney -
Keep your terrorist trash in Canada.
Play LP with him and allow him to benefit from your fabulous Health Care.
Or perhaps sew a :canada: on his backpack/bombbelt and tell everyone he’s an engrish teechur.

Your concern is under-whelming.

Most of the fault lies with the RCMP. However, how can the Canadian government demand protection for its citizen when the US did not inform Canada of its decision to rendition him to Syria?

You will forgive me if I find that very hard to believe. Perhaps, if we wait a bit longer, maybe some Canadian officials or US officials will come forward and reveal who was told what when. It reminds one of the secret rendition flights and sites in Europe that no government knew anything about until the proof was given. Let’s wait a bit longer and find out what really happened.
