Alternative Energy in Taiwan and Taiwan's Energy Security

You are the one claiming that “reprocessing” nuclear waste is a thing in Taiwan. I am not the one making that claim. Own it!

Guy

No, you are just anti nuclear, and rather burn fossil fuel than use energy source that’s actually always on and doesn’t release smoke.

Or pay land owners money to put solar panels on farmland while tenant farmers are left without land. THAT’s the reality that Taiwan’s official is doing. Nobody will be displaced with widespread nuclear power usage, only government response will do that.

Reprocessing nuclear waste should be totally considered but I don’t know anyone in government that’s even debating that. They just don’t care.

Could you please answer my question, before we go into opinion and possibilities. What is being done now? Or, what is being planned to do?

If your answers is no idea, nothing, or what is currently seen…then it would be incredibly advantageous not to call people anti nuclear. Especially when they just like asking questions. People are so extreme o. This, it reminds me of covid vaccines. Asking questions and wanting Ling term safe solutions does not make anyone anti anything. If anything it makes at least the most basic of smart enough. If there were real answers to this amazingly stupidly simple question, we would have answers on the ready. So far even the extreme pro nuclear side hasn’t provided anything. Logic dictates: Not ideal.

So, what is the long plan ? Not possible solutions. Actual officially announced plans. This is a point that worries people, and should really be the easiest nuclear issue to solve.

Says the guy who never owns or explains anything he claims.

Nuclear waste reprocessing to make it safe is at least technically possible; difficult, but possible. The fact that the government can’t be arsed is a different matter entirely. “Can’t be arsed” pretty much sums up the government’s attitude to the country’s energy policy in general.

This tends to be people’s worry though. No one worries about scientific feasibility, they, we, worry about reality. If they can’t be arsed, why should we trust them to do it? I am not anti nuclear. I am anti taiwa ese nuclear because of taiwanese ineptitude. Which has been proven with both fact and timescale. Safety hasn’t. It would be great to have this stuff taken more serious than it is. But it seems a joke. And a potentially dangerous one.

Do you have an answer to what is being done with waste? We can discuss cool science and fancy futures later. Is there ANY plan now? If the answer isn’t a yes followed by an explanation, it would be great if people held back on assuming people are anti nuclear. They might just be anti moron

I’m fairly agnostic about it. The point is this: Taiwan’s government has no plan for improving Taiwan’s energy efficiency and/or reducing consumption, which means we need to keep the power stations running. And if people don’t like fossil fuels then that means we need nuclear power stations. The logic is not nice, but that’s where we’re at.

Of course, we might get a smarter government at some point, but I’m not banking on it.

I feel like their answer is basically anything least likely to generate protests.

Meaning they’ll just burn coal if nobody protests about it.

They go to solar because everyone protest about both coal and nuclear, but now they’re using up prime farm land because land owners get a 4 times as much money renting to Taipower than they do tenant farmer, so tenant farmer gets kicked off their land. And of course rooftop will never be used because owners of those rooftop will have to be paid, and it’s likely much more expensive than farmland, so farmland it is.

If we stop protesting about nuclear, and protest about everything else, the government will build 20 nuclear power plants, and we’ll have flat rate power bills instead of paying 7nt per kwh in the summer.

Nuclear waste? Let someone else worry about that. Same with air pollution or farmland issues.

Which means food prices are going to go up and/or Taiwan will become more dependent on food imports.

Green energy is only green because that’s the color of dollar bills. Seriously, they only go in on this because there’s money to be made. How much money can you make from nuclear? I don’t know, but I bet they’ll find a way if Greenpeace would just shut up. I’m sure they can make a lot of money charging people flat rate electricity though. Operating cost for nuclear is just that low.

But most Taiwanese I’ve seen don’t care about those big issue, just doing what their parents tell them and repay their debt for being alive.

That’s where I am at as well. So the people flaming people for being anti nuclear really ought to step back a bit.

I am pro sustainable. Pro development. I don’t know a single person pro clean sustainability that is anti nuclear. Simply, we need to phase it out, unless the pro nuclear crowd can show some evidence of safety and long term awning. Which is something they overwhelmingly dont/can’t.

So, I propose, in the meantime. Rather than shitting on people for being legitimately about nuclear safety and name calling (anti nuclear), calm down a bit and realize we all want unlimited energy at no cost. The oath there can be multifaceted. And should be. As it is now on Taiwan. Poor governance, mass corruption, society of greed, huge environment nastiness etc etc. Have some thoughts given to those that want improvement. So far it’s just people talking past each other.

Nuclear is a slice of our energy pie chart. It would be nice to lower that slice with something cleaner and safer. That has not yet happened, but the development is full steam ahead. I don’t think this r&d and motivation should be stymied by negative attacks, especially towards people just asking kindergarten level questions and getting no answers!

This is why it’s hard to take some pro nuclear people serious.

To be fair, there are equally retarded mindsets on the actual anti nuclear side as well…

God help us.

I’m just saying that nuclear waste is a smaller problem than people losing farmland or air pollution.

This is land mismanagement and corruption, not energy related. EVERYONE, I mean EVERYONE should be PISSED right the fuck off about that stupid crap. Decade plus already…

I agree. And it should be an easy problem. So why can’t it have an answer yet?

Because people are scared and we’re a democracy, and so saying or doing anything is going to generate massive protests.

Imagine if officially Taiwan says they’re going to start reprocessing wastes, people will protest. If they are going to say dump it in the pacific in international waters, people will protest. If they say they’re going to build a long term waste storage facility that is secure and geologically stable, people will protest.

So they can’t have a plan, because in a democracy, it simply cannot happen.

Land management issues, nobody cares about this.

If it was afe and proven, those reasons provided would be a nkn issue. The pro nuclear crowd have clearly not been able to provide adequate enough evidence of safety. The onus is on them if they wish to promote more of the same, no?

So basically, there is no plan. We can put that into the “con” tally for nuclear.

So what about the actual plants? Earthquake, tsunami etc. Henchuan or otherwise.

All the more reason to care about potential meltdowns and ckntamjantion (waste etc). That’s another tick for the anti nuclear argument. The fact no one cares should fucking frighten you! Or, at least, anger you! I liken this to admitting we are not mature enough for things like nuclear.

More like our brain is far too small to do much. There are big problems and vast majority of the people simply do not care.

If that’s the case, then we really ought not to be playing with fires we have no intentions of being able to put out. Just as a basic first step…that’s why people are up in arms. The whole cha bu duo, Mei ban fa, Ying gai bu hway type attitude of inadequacy. In any industry.

I think if one wants to judge the opposing side, they need to get their shit together first. Which, by the sounds of it, the pro nuclear has not yet. This same story gets played on repeat, I understand. It’s why us humans have out competed everything. Risk taking has paid off so far, but not ethically.

But, as an olive branch. I am all for nuclear for space travel. Where disasters and dirty waste are of little consequence

I think we would work so much better if we all work together rather than against each other. It feels like our brain still thinks we’re in a jungle and so that cycle self perpetuates.

But that requires us to basically have a hive mind, not something our individualistic self is ever going to ever be able to find solutions to.

And the problem is that pro nuclear people are such a minority it really doesn’t matter.

I agree, work together. But this requires answers to the most basic of questions such as simple waste disposal. People that care about the easy questions and get zero answers shouldn’t be called anti, simply wanting answers. It’s a non starter.

So far it seems that although Taiwan needs nuclear, it is not capable enough to handle it. I think this is the key take home point.
