Here’s a stumper: I’m really hating FB. Have for about 6 months and the most recent update and the issues its been having the past couple of days have made me jump ship.
But where to go? Other than MySpace and LinkedIn, where else do people go for social networking? Are there startups that show promise? Or is there a niche place people keep to themselves?
MS is a little too much for me and LI is pointedly for business networking.

Same here. The thing is, I have a FB community which I like.I mainly liked FB for sharing pics and their comments etc.
I just don’t like FB’s applications (farms, mafia, horoscope etc.) and news feed anymore. Taking a new alternative, means building from scratch.
DB, carnegies, however pleasant costs money.
You can disable most of the apps from sending notifications in FB…the other popular social networking site in Taipei is Plurk but I always thought it’s just another microblog and don’t know anyone on it to warrant switching.
That’s an interesting avenue to consider. Here in JPN I use Mixi along with FB. What social networks do Taiwanese use other than English language ones?
I guess I have to ask: If everybody you know is on Facebook, what good is switching to another social networking site? I rarely log on to the actual site anymore. I have a third party chat client, check updates on my phone, and have almost all apps ignored.
I hadn’t thought of using 3rd party apps for my FB updates. Will look into that.
In the meantime, I am playing around with Plurk, which looks like a more muscular version of Twitter. My plurk name is MilkTeaJack if you want to friend me there.
I don’t do social networking. Discussion forums are about as deep as I get into stuff like that. However, my cousin recently sent me an invitation to hi5. I have no idea what it is, but it’s out there if you’re interested.
I’d have to agree that some of the conversations on here are much more engaging and relevant than most of the stuff I see on social media. But it takes some digging la.
hi5/MySpace are for teenagers IMO. FB is best for privacy control if you take the time to configure it. Yeah you can keep switching social networks but it can be a waste of time really. For [strike]people[/strike] foreigners in Taiwan, I do think that Forumosa is the best place to chat about random things because we’re all in the same boat.
I find that Twitter is good for catching up with breaking news. Be selective with the people that you follow and you can find rich content relating to your preferred topics, hobbies, or interests. It’s hard to filter out the noise on there but with time you’ll get an idea of the best way to manage it.
“When you want to chat with a friend, you look them up in PhoneBook, and find their unique PhoneBook number,” Fruber explains. “Then you enter that number into your phone and it connects you directly to them.”
Another breakout utility of PhoneBook allows the user to arrange face-to-face meetings with his or her friends at restaurants, bars, and other “places,” as Fruber calls them.
Oh come ON! Like THAT could ever work!
Like can you imagine ever calling someone up and saying: “Right now I’m thinking about the existential disjointedness of my ennui-filled dull existence” or “my cat just did a huge poop!”
People would think you’re an arsehole!
yea…offline. I’ve shut down my personal one for about a month. And now I’m just fed up with the new changes. Seem like Google is trying to get in on the mix. I’ll see what happens…
