American Cheese for cheap

I did a quick search to make sure this question hasn’t been asked, and although I did find one about head cheese, alas, no one has asked this important question yet. Where can I or HOW can I get my hands on some American cheese for a decent price? I’m not a fan of buying cheap, shitty cheese for 200 NT for a small stack of slices. Any recommendations? Price quotes would be immensely helpful, but if not, I’d be grateful for any responses.
I’ll also be happy to recommend your comment if it is really helpful.

Thank you!

You can go to Costco and buy in bulk.

I thought that may be the case… Hmmm I’ll have to check it out, I’m getting a membership there next month anyway. Thanks for the help. Do you have any idea what the price is like there?

I don’t know about the price. Everything at Costco always seems expensive, but when you actually do the math, it’s much cheaper.

They have good deals. The last time I was there was over 6 months ago, but my friends say it hasn’t changed too much:

Here are a few examples from memory: (For those who have bought more recently, please correct me if I’m wrong.)

  • Pepperjack 500g blocks for 230 NT or so

  • Excellent mature cheddar blocks about 350g for 250 NT

  • They also have Parmesan, mozzarella, Gouda, etc etc for good prices.

If you aren’t near Costco, CitySuper often has Australian cheddar for about 60NT per 100 grams in the deli case.

Thanks, I want to cook something nice for my girlfriend for our anniversary, so this information is appreciated.

Do you mean specifically American cheese, i.e. processed cheese, but in a non-sliced form? (This is actually called for in some recipes.) I haven’t seen that here, but I haven’t looked that hard.

If you’re looking for the more traditional blocks of cheese - cheddar, Monterey Jack, and so on - then Costco’s going to be the cheapest per gram. City Super or perhaps Breeze Center have the most variety, so head to those places if you’re looking for American cheese the product (rather than cheese that comes from America).

Indeed, Costco has sliced American cheese for cheap but I think it’s sold by the 2.25 kilo brick.
I have been buying Swiss cheese from there in smaller packages which is not as good of a deal.
They also have (right next to the American cheese) a processed Swiss cheese blend which looks like white colored American cheese.
I have been wanting to try the processed Swiss because it’s so much cheaper but I don’t want more than a friggin kilo of the stuff since I’m pretty much the only one in the house that will be eating it.

I don’t remember exact prices but I will try to remember to get them for you tonight as I am going there in about a half hour.

Happen to be at Costco tonight. It’s 399 NT for 2.27 kg of American cheese.

The thing to do is find someone to split it with. I mean, c’mon, who would turn down a little over a kilo of slices for $200?

Yeah, that’s what I was trying to do. I PM’d the OP to see if he wanted to go halfsies but I haven’t heard back. I was at Costco holding 5 pounds of processed cheese in my hands about to drop it in the cart when I decided to grab a 6 pound brick of mozzarella instead. :uhhuh:

Definitely post when you’re looking for someone to split stuff with, e.g. for Costco or other bulk stuff. I’ve split pancake mix and pepperoni with other posters, for instance. Take a couple gallon-sized freezer-weight Ziplocks with you or grab some of the bags at the meat counter and you’re all set.

The only thing is that I could see logistics turning into a fiasco.
You never know when people will not be timely about it or maybe expect you to go out of your way to meet them or something.
But, yeah I might do in the future.
Given the size of that American cheese brick, I would actually prefer to go thirds. Or at least try it first to be sure I like it a whole lot.

Thanks for your extremely helpful post. And sorry I didn’t see that before. Actually I’m not sure I need it right now exactly, but if you want I can let you know when I go there.

No problem.
I was curious what the anniversary surprise is going to be. I told my girlfriend that I was guessing maybe you were going to prepare some American style chili-cheese fries or something. She was like: Oh, how romantic! Sounds like a good boyfriend! Now, I’ve opened my big mouth and pretty much gotten myself in the boat of having to make chili-cheese fries the next time a special occasion comes up. Otherwise, I will be the unromantic asshole. You know what I mean? :aiyo:

Nice. Yeah, the idea is to make nachos with peppers, onions, cheese, refried beans, and guacamole, from scratch (because my Taiwanese girlfriend for some reason adores nachos). The main course is a pesto pizza, by candlelight. The anniversary is late this month.

Dude, you’re making us all look bad. Quiet already! (At least my wife doesn’t read Forumosa) If you’re going to be using that much cheese, then I agree that Costco is probably the best place buy it at.

petr0lb0mb, thanks for the laugh, man. That was the funniest thing I’ve read all day.

I also stay at home, do the cooking and cleaning, etc., because I own several businesses that I have others manage.

BOOYAH!
