American Chinese Food - any cravings?

Anyone else out there have a craving for American Chinese Food?

Come on, you remember those - General Tsao’s Chicken, Sesame Chicken, Beef with Broccoli, Mu-shu Pork. Eggo Foo Young, Beef Lo-mein, Chicken Chow-mein… :notworthy:

Worked in a Chinese restaurant in NY for years and always laughed at foreigners who thought they were eating authentic Chinese food. Now the joke is on me! I dont’ suppose there’s a place in Taiwan that serves Chinese food similiar to the ones served in Chinese restaurants in the states?!

I’ve had General Tso’s Chicken, Moo-shu Pork and Beef Lo-mein here in Taiwan, but they are the original Chinese versions upon which the Americanized versions are based.

Moo-shu pork may be found in some places serving Beijing-style food, and Beef Lo-Mein can be found in Cantonese-style noodle shops.

How do you know they’re the original? Haven’t they all been Taiwanesed? Twenty years ago I could get kick-ass Szechuan food in Taipei. Not anymore.

Special fried rice
Prawn crackers
Sweet and sour pork
Fortune cookies

Oh man, I have been craving sweet and sour and orange chicken for some times now…IMO American Chinese food is better then Taiwanese Chinese food.

 I wonder why?

:saywhat: :ohreally: :ohreally:

I do miss sweet and sour pork and egg foo young though…

Although I strongly disagree with Frost’s opinion that American Chinese food is better, I do confess that I miss the Panda every now and again.

I wonder if people living in Mexico miss Taco Bell?

There’s a place near TAS that serves sweet and sour pork/chicken, and aslo has beef and broccoli. But, it’s the Asian style broccoli, not the kind that looks like little trees.

Amazing restaurant. Good prices.

Off of Jong Shan Road. Same side as TAS, the first alley before the Subway store if you were driving north on Jong Shan North Road – turn right, it has a patio and is a mom & pop style place. Mmm…

Well, it was about 12 years ago that I had these! I walked by the place where I used to get great lo-mein, and it was closed - they were opening a boutique there.

There are some small Cantonese eateries in the alleys to the north of the Dinghao Sogo, though.

:offtopic: starting here:

I have been looking for a good 魚香肉絲 for some time, and would kill for one as good as they are in Chongqing.

Any leads?

(Don’t mention the small place behind CKS memorial, the one with the taxis in front and with taxidrivers inside, pleeze, theirs is usual Taiwanese style).

Sweet n Sour Chicken Balls … especially the kind that came frozen in an aluminium box.

I’ve GOT IT!!!

If you want American Chinese food the place to go is called…get ready…“Chinese Restaurant”. It’s in Kaohsiung on Wu Fu 4th Rd. From Chung Hwa Rd, it’s just past Caves bookstore, on the left–after you go over the Love River bridge. Their sign is obscured, so it might be hard to find the first time. (FYI, there’s a good Spanish restaurant across the road, too).

They have “Shanghai spring rolls”, which are exactly like US “egg rolls”, beef with spring onions, and a whole slew of things that you might enjoy. Some of them are really Shanghai style, but overall, I’m sure you’ll find the flavor US-like. Especially the fried rice!!! Damn, I miss that place now that I’ve moved to Taipei. Gotta go back.

The restaurant is one of the “Amy’s Restaurants”–a series of authentic (wherever) restaurants in Kaohsiung.
Smokey Joe’s (Tex/Mex–2 locations in Kaohsiung and one in Kending).
Mamamia (authentic Italian).
Chinese Restaurant (mentioned above)
Beer House (never been there).

Check it out at amy.com.tw

You will NOT be disappointed. I’ve eaten at these restaurants so much I have a discount card!!! (20 stamps of $1000 each). I’m a hungry MF!!!

Hmmm… well, you’re in Yonghe now. Place of good local eats, yum yum. Let us know what you find out there and share in the Wiki

Maybe I might bump into you one of these days

I have discovered a few good eats around my neighborhood. Nothing exceptional, though. Let’s meet up at the next Forumosa bash…

For Taipei, that would be the Restaurant Food Club I’m hosting Jan 29th . Details

I think the next Happy Hour will be the week after CNY.

Taiwanese Chinese food < American Chinese food < Chinese Chinese food

When I leave Taiwan, I can’t picture myself missing much of the food here. 雞肉飯, 奶油酥餅, and maybe some of that 滷味stuff. I’d kill someone for some good Uighur or Sichuanese food right now. Really, I would kill someone. If you need an assassination done, PM me. Just as long as you pay in proper lamb kebabs (and none of those wimpy looking lamb kebabs masquerading as 新疆羊肉串 that sell for $35NT down in Kending.)

A place in Taipei sells them for the same price. I still buy them when I need a fix, but I miss the lamb kebabs from the mainland. What were they? 1 kuai? 2 kuai a stick? Vastly overpriced in Taiwan.
