An awkward "party"
Incidentally, I did on a few occasions jab my gal in the ribs and ask her what was so funny,
I would advise against asking what jokes are about. I love my girl but the Taiwanese jokes that she has tried to explain to me… well it just ain’t worth it. One time a whole room of KTV xiao jies were laughing so much I asked why - I was told one of them had messed up trying to ‘Taiwanesize’ some mandarin lyrics. Apparently this was very funny. :loco:

Lo and behold, I was invited to a Christmas Eve dinner where I was the only foreigner present. And almost everyone there (of the seven present) spoke English to some degree with me, although thing’s were mostly in Mandarin for the night. I didn’t mind a bit, though, even though my ability to both understand and reply in Mandarin was limited to being able to converse with a 5-year-old girl since my Mandarin isn’t advanced enough to keep up with broader topics and more complex language of adults.

But karaoke broke all the language barriers in the end.
