I know first-hand what it’s like, as my boss and I were recently invited to attend an upcoming international conference abroad, which is aimed at promoting international cooperation and communication in an effort to help solve a major global problem, but the PRC contingent contacted the organizers and told them we must be identified as being from either “Taiwan, China” or “Chinese Taipei.” That bothered me greatly. Rather than give in to the PRC’s demeaning power trip, I have communicated extensively with the organizers trying to find another solution (going by Taiwan; ROC; or just Taipei). The matter’s not decided yet, but I am strongly opposed to accepting these kinds of PRC tactics.
In the case of A-Mei, I wasn’t aware of any such demeaning tactics that she had to accept (although now that I think of it, it’s probably inevitable). I was just saying there’s nothing wrong with her singing in China.
