This is crazy! They gave him a gold card and then told him he is not allowed to enter as he was flying out.
What’s the government’s version?
He got done for taking a small amount of money for appearances. Somebody reported him. Unfortunate…how did they give him a gold card and not tell him beforehand, sounds like a shitshow.
And I want to point out the hypocrisy here, because Taiwan’s government agencies and local governments invite YouTuber influencers to Taiwan and give them all kinds of rewards and incentives to film here, do they have a special visa for that , or do they simply enter on tourist visas?
perhaps “taking money for appearances” puts him in the entertainments business which is a bit sensitive
Yeah he made a big mistake taking money. Well known way that has gotten ppl kicked out here.
If he had gotten some stuff comped probably would have been ok. Just some suan ming went after him and reported him…
Could have told him to make more content instead.
Hostorically, when things get bad politically or economically, the immigrants/foreigners are the first to get shit kicked.
All the more reason to be a citizen, avoid the inevitable outcome which is unraveling currently.
Details here. It seems that Taipei City caught him working without a work permit, so he has an entry ban. Somehow they issued him a Gold Card but the entry ban is still in effect. I’m surprised that the NIA missed this on their initial review of his Gold Card application. Not a good look.
Does this mean all YouTube influencers who visit Taiwan are doing illegal work? Since they monetize via YouTube ads.
Many big ones with millions of subscribers visit often (such as food influencers) and I’m sure they made some good money on those videos. Some of the ad revenue would be Taiwan sourced and paid by Taiwan companies.
The article does not report any facts about the nature of the work.
Probably ‘illegal only by complaint’
It’s not a good precedent since many of those YouTubers bring many tourists to Taiwan. Some locals may get jealous of their ad earnings. A YouTuber with 10 million subscribers doing a food tour in Taiwan may earn hundreds of thousands of dollars for a week worth of videos.
Or it could possibly be a pro-CCP person too
I don’t think so?
AI says…
A YouTube channel with 10 million subscribers can generate substantial income through various avenues, including high-value sponsorships, exclusive partnerships, and personal ventures, potentially reaching monthly earnings of $100,000 or more.
Here’s another source:
“On average, YouTubers with 100,000 subscribers can make between $5,000 and $15,000 per month.”
Multiply that by 100 (for 10,000,000 subscribers) and it’s 500,000 to 1,500,000 per month, or up to ~375k per week.
To compare with some real numbers:
mkbhd - 19 million subs, google says his organization makes ~14-18m / year
A recent YouTube food influencer who visited TW has ~11 million subs
Two arms of the government not communicating adequately—this incident has exposed silos. If NIA is worth its salt they should fix this.
Guy
Don’t know much about the business, but don’t these influencers get their money outside of Taiwan? The money from Taiwan, whether from followers or advertisers, is paid to foreign accounts outside Taiwan, and thus is not counted as income earned in Taiwan?
On average?
Some reported facts now. He appeared on one or more political talk shows and was reported by a viewer(s). Some DPP legislators say they are working on getting some kind of appeal.
About an hour after the video I contacted my friend in the party that used to work for the Banciao South MP and he went to spread the word to as many as possible including the Presidentàs office.
