Anti-foreigner violence in South Africa

I’ve been following this news story for over a week now, I’m genuinely surprised there isn’t a thread about it. I came here to see what formosans were saying about it. :idunno:

anyway…monstersandcritics.com/news/ … d_Roundup_

Johannesburg - South Africa’s military began to deploy Thursday in the poor communities around Johannesburg, where a 12-day orgy of xenophobic violence targeting African migrants has killed 42 people.

Soldiers provided backup for police during a raid on three workers’ hostels east of Johannesburg that netted 28 suspects and army helicopters were seen in the sky over Alexandra informal settlement, north-east of Johannesburg, in the morning

Has anyone been following the story? I really would like to hear opinions from fellow Forumosans.

This is still a huge story. Nobody cares?

Its a very huge story and I am likewise surprised it hasn’t been threaded on here. I have been hesitant to post about it.
Quite a few SAFFIE’s here. Maybe one of them will chime in with some further comments.

I think it is “a disgrace” as Thabo Mbeki put it and that the government is right to do anything possible to stop this situation, as a failure to do that could result in an all-out war in the townships. Having said that, I do think that it’s a function of a much bigger problem and the big boys will also have to address the causes if they are to solve it.

Millions of unemployed in SA + Millions of poor immigrants = big problems!

:s

It has moved down to Cape Town too…

There are so many illegal immigrants…and they take business away from South-Africans. The pavements are littered with people selling caps, T-shirts etc…and many times right in front of a shop that is struggling…and has to pay rent etc…

I do understand why they are doing it…but it is absolutely barbaric. The way they necklace people…

Kindof harsh to say, but I really think that when blacks are involved PEOPLE do not care as much as if they were whites. If you had a bunch of whites sitting starving in Ethiopia…I’m sure the world would pull together to try and do something. Not spend money on traveling in space to go and see red dirt on Mars.

It’s sick…but that’s my conclusion.

the saddest thing about this story is that it will give fuel to the flames of racists like James Watson and my uncles family…I can see it now:

‘look what happens when you leave the blacks in charge’ etc etc

[eye rolling]

… and even in Knysna.

I never knew I’d live to see the day that Knysna (my birth town) would make it to the front page of the Typo Times!

I don’t think it’s harsh to say at all. If there were white people involved on either end it would feel like white people would have to have an opinion, or do something, or just moan about the injustice of it all to make oneself feel better.

When the victims are black and the perpetrators are white, it necessitates becoming morally indignant, often loudly and self-righteously. I’m sure you poor Saffers have had your share of that.
But when the perpetrators are black it makes us all nervous, like maybe we should just respect their culture and not get involved. It also kind of lets us off of the hook.
