Anti-Foreigner Wave

Hey guys. I’m really concerned about this whole anti-foreigner wave hitting Taiwan. It seems there have been more than a few articles in the press about foreigners doing unacceptable things in Taiwan. I wouldn’t know first-hand since I left Taiwan five months ago, but quite a few of my Taiwanese friends have been talking to me about their unfavorable view of Western foreigners and now this has come to my attention. It’s a translation of of several comments made by foreigners about how Taiwanese women are selfish, shallow, easy, and just plain b*tches. Check it out.

Let me know what’s up in Taiwan. I’m really concerned.

There’s a few versions of this obviously fake story doing the rounds. I guess that there is not much other news happening in Taiwan at present. Here is an excellent example of how these things can get twisted by Internet haters and the media.

Nothing is happening. A few stupid media reports. Some impressionable people are getting riled.

Taiwan is stalled politically and economically so these things take more wing than normal.

The media is also probably looking at their rating during the Phillippine boat incident and realizing stirring up xenophobia is good for business.

Been here nearly 2 decades. Stuff happens all the time with all kinds of people. There is no newly coming anti-foreigner wave. Nor was there ever any before. Relax.

Recently I have noticed a wave of concern about an anti-foreigner wave.

:bravo: :notworthy:

Beats reporting about the plasticizers, additives and pesticides in the food, the Fouth Nuclear Power plant, the drop in exports, the increasing cost of living while salaries get lower and lower, etc… Big bad furriner, bringing the wrong feng shui!

Fucking hell people, you aren’t local and this isn’t North America, so quit searching for a melting pot and having your ways understood.

You choose to live here, so make good choices and don’t allow the follies of a few morons (of which there are plenty both local and foreign) dictate your life.

Don’t make waves.

How does one perform this wave?

This wave may be the result of Global Warming,I fear, after trying to understand the Science.
I have only noticed a wave of nausea,in Taiwan, when passing a Stinky Tofu stand :lick:

I don’t know guys. I have noticed a sharp increase in the number of “evil foreigner” news reports lately.

I’m certainly not worried. People don’t treat me any differently, but I’m typically viewed as just another middle aged businessman doing his work in Taiwan, and I am often in public with my family, an obvious family man. I wonder how it would be if I were young, single, and handsome again.

I also wonder if there is some kind of tipping point where even the reasonable folks (as opposed the angry youths with nothing much better to do than sit at home in their jockey shorts and rage against Western men) start to wonder if we’re really so innocuous.

What would it take for that to happen?

There’s certainly been huge exposure with this Turkish guy…it was on all the chat shows and front page of newspapers for the last few days. Hopefully it doesn’t translate into anything like previous episodes…fades away…with the usual jealousy and weird notions of foreigners and their one night stands remaining.

My impressions and this thread are not on the same wavelength.

This post answers almost every single tread in this forum, kudos.

People are as nice to me now as the day I first arrived seven (!) years ago when I still struggled to make a grammatically correct sentence in Chinese. But then again, while I’m young and unmarried, I am not at all handsome, so… >_>

“Anti-Foreigner Wave” ? Is that some sort of secret hand sign that wards of “evil” foreigners? How can one perfect that ? Is there a schematic?

The Anti-Mexican wave is easy. It’s tough alone though.

Word, the nail that sticks out gets the hammer

If a foreigner wave encounters an antiforeigner wave, do they cancel each other out?
