Any 80s people?

i was thinking of doing an 80s night show, revisiting some hits from that era. kind of “if you know the lyrics, sing along” kind of thing.

Well, there’s good stuff and bad stuff in any decade. What did you have in mind?

bringing a keyboard synth and just doing the songs. i think after one chorus most 80’s peoples’ memories would be jogged enough to get the choruses and sing along. it could be a really warm night for all of us.

i do:

simply red
human league
depeche
pet shop
???
oh man, can’t name all of them. bruce hornsby, rick astley, etc.

i know a LOT of those one hit wonder songs that are well known but you can’t remeber the name of the group.

who can help me get this going? living room? gao pei hwa, are you on forumosa today?

Corbett’s in China doing real estate.

Ew, gross – that’s like the WORST of the decade, dude…

(But hey, if you’re having fun – why not?)

maybe on the low end, but definitely the most well knowns. that’s what i’ve got to go with.

Where would you be hosting this show? At a pub?

I’ve got hundreds of songs from the 80’s btw. I’ll get more band names and song titles for you if that’s what you want.

Is it my fault that I was in college that decade? ‘:D’

What about 80s hair-metal? Poison, Bon Jovi etc.

Hair bands…NOW we’re talking…
Can I bring my (air) guitar… :sunglasses: (and maybe the leather pants…)

Cheers!

I listened (still do ) to hardcore westcoast punk during the hairshow of the 80’s. I didn’t get the 80’s (still don’t)

Hardcore was like a cup of anti-freeze and black coffee after a long winter night of drinking with zombies from the movie The

Body Snatchers. The 80’s for me was like being a bald guy in a hair salon.

Way before MTV started programming minds with GAP advertisements and the ability to buy COOL on the

internet and Nirvana made punk okay for midstream khaki-pants-wearing amerika. Hardcore got predictable too in the end.

:grandpa:

Fuck the 80’s. :raspberry:

i need a pub to bring this thing to. any ideas where?

I agree with all bar your final sentiment. There was some fantastic music, but it sure had nothing to do with that list Dragonbones posted or what the poster is hoping to play (sorry). There is always good music, if you are willing to seek it out. There was some excellent backyard punksters, especially in Oz among the surf set, but oodles more.

As for pop music, crikey, I still get a chill every damned time I hear this tune, and in particular this line:

Why is the bedroom so cold
Turned away on your side?
Is my timing that flawed,
Our respect run so dry?
Yet theres still this appeal
That we’ve kept through our lives
Love, love will tear us apart again

Now why isn’t that song on that list? Nothing by the Smiths . . . ?

HG

Back in the 80’s we used to start sentences with capital letters.

get with the times n00b capital letters r teh suck lol1!! writing this way makes u sound uber 1337 more smartzorz lol!!1

Come to think of it, there was also a lot of stuff that wasn’t so bad. What I Like About You by The Romantics comes to mind. The Stray Cats were fun, and so were Bow Wow Wow (I Want Candy), They Might Be Giants (Istanbul (Not Constantinople)), George Thoroughgood and the Talking Heads. REM wasn’t bad either, and you had the Sugar Cubes, Elvis Costello (King of America), Suzanne Vega (Solitude Standing), ZZ Top (Eliminator), Johnny Winter (Guitar Slinger – remember Lights Out ? Awesome!), a bunch of Springsteen (The River, Nebraska and Born in the U.S.A., plus a good Live set) and so on. What sucked was really mainstream pop radio – but then again, that has usually sucked.

As others have said, there was some great stuff in the 80s as well as all the crap. Same as any decade really.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, early Van Halen, Nick Cave, the Cure, Concrete Blonde, Pixies, Joy Division, Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, Stone Roses, the Pogues, Hoodoo Gurus, Happy Mondays, BoDeans, Guns n Roses first album, the Church, Celibate Rifles, New Order, the beginning of the dance scene. All good.

Oh yeah, Sonic Youth, Stevie Ray Vaughan – good shit! :sunglasses:
