I just wonder if anyone has come across any decent road maps. Specifically, I am looking for something that covers the county highways of Taiwan, either in a one volume set, or in seperate per county issues. I have spent a few years collecting a wide array of mostly useless maps, which only work well when I use them together. Most of them are grossly inaccurate in terms of the contour, direction and viable connections to other routes.
Any ideas?

Are you talking English maps or Chinese maps. If English, you’re out of luck. If Chinese, I recommend the Outdoor Life 戶外生活 series. They are very good (although the detailed book for Northern Taiwan - P1 - is out of print pending the new edition). In fact, I believe these are the only maps not published by the Dayu publishing company (who always have mistakes), unless this has changed recently.

A couple months ago, I was complaining about maps to a friend and then last month I got a GREAT map book for my birthday. The publishing company is called Da Xing (大興). The maps are 48x36cm and the book has all of Taiwan mosaic-style broken down into 30 very detailed panels. I have even found “roads” I have previously traveled on these maps that would barely pass as footpaths.
There are also many other sections: city street maps, freeway-only, all-Taiwan, major city tourism maps, etc. If you’re looking for a street or alley, I don’t think those city maps are very detailed. I still use my previous book for that.
Overall, I really like it. It’s a bit big, making it not easy to carry for motorcycle trips–that’s one disadvantage. It barely fits under the seat of my Dink 150 without bending it. You could probably curl it to make it fit under smaller seats.
