Any publications that pay for reader submitted articles?

Hi, there’s this local treat that our family has been sharing for years. We always have to bring some when we go visiting. Surprisingly, there is no reference to this treat in English. It doesn’t exist yet is quite appealing to even the Western person.
So, is there a magazine, newspaper or publication that would except a few short paragraphs on what it is, it’s origin and where to get it, for payment?
I’m afraid that if I send it to the English Newspapers unsolicited, they will just show it to their food editor and file it in the circular file and then the editor would write his own article.

So, who can I submit this type of article for few pieces of tin or silver and get my name on a bi-line? Thanks I don’t want to say any more about what it is, but it is so good and I can’t believe nothing exists about it in English.

To be frank, getting paid for your written work is difficult, especially for newbies. But you have the right idea. If it’s just that one article, unsolicited freelance submission is probably not the route you want to go. Most freelance gigs are for content providers, and they generally pay by the set. Depending on your cultural and subjective niche, you might be able to squeeze anywhere from $10-50 out of the article, provided the conditions are perfect. However, I would be extremely cautious about trusting online sources with something you regard as precious. You didn’t ask for freelancing horror stories, but I have 'em. On the other hand, why not reach out to the food editor of an English newspaper? Tell them what you just told us. I don’t suppose it could hurt - unless they figure out what you’re talking about.

Anyway. If I were you, I would do some homework on food blogs and culinary web sites, and then reach out to the publishers. Ask them if they’d be interested in this unique article. There are tons on people looking for paid guest bloggers, but they almost always want a steady stream of content from a proven writer. This is over-generalizing a very broad topic, but one article from one guy in Taiwan about a snack food is not going to have them chomping at the bit, so to speak.

Start poking around the food blogs. Use a variety of search terms (aside from your topic). Also, consider how you’re going to get paid. Do you have a PayPal account (the most common method)? I haven’t received an actual check in at least a decade.

Above all, good luck.
